Backpacking in Žalec
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Žalec is not for you if you want big-city nightlife, hostel pub crawls, or a checklist of famous sights. But if you like small hops towns, slow evenings, and cheap beer with actual character, it quietly earns its place. Sitting in eastern Slovenia between Ljubljana and Celje, it works best as a mellow stopover or base for countryside walks and bike rides through hop fields, with the beer fountain as a fun, not life-changing, gimmick. Trains and buses make it easy to reach, the center is walkable, and you’ll mostly meet locals in cafés rather than packs of backpackers. It’s calmer and more rural-feeling than Celje, less polished than Ljubljana, safe and affordable enough that you can exhale, reset, and move on.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #16 town in Slovenia
What sets this place apart

Backpackers flock to Žalec for its strategic location along the way to Slovenia’s stunning natural spots. It’s a gateway to nearby hikes in the Savinja Valley and the Soča River, perfect for those who crave adventure. The town’s walkable streets make it easy to explore local food experiences, like sampling the famous Žalec beer. Small-scale hostels and guesthouses foster a friendly atmosphere, ideal for solo travelers or small groups looking to connect. Most visitors stay a couple of days, soaking in the charming vibe before heading out. It’s a place to recharge, not a party hub, making it a solid stop for slow travelers.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Žalec

  1. Green Gold (Hop) Fountain — The town’s signature attraction: a hop-cone-shaped fountain in the centre that celebrates Žalec’s long hop-growing tradition and even dispenses local beers from taps during opening hours. It’s a perfect photo spot and a fun, very local tasting experience right by the park.
  2. Žalec Hop Museum — A small, focused museum dedicated to hop cultivation and the region’s brewing history, with historic tools, photos, and explanations of the hop-growing cycle. You get a clear sense of why the Savinja Valley is nicknamed “the hop garden” of Slovenia.
  3. Savinja River Embankment and Riverside Park — Pleasant paved promenades and green spaces along the Savinja where locals walk, cycle, and sit by the water; good views toward nearby hop fields and a calm place to relax after visiting

  4. Town Centre and Market Area — The compact centre around the fountain has hop-themed public art, cafés, and periodic local markets selling produce and hop-related goods; it’s the best place to feel the town’s everyday life and taste regional flavors.
  5. Hop-Field Viewing Spots on the town’s outskirts — Short walks from Žalec lead to terraces and lanes overlooking neatly planted hop fields. These accessible overlooks show the agricultural landscape that defines the town and are surprisingly scenic, especially late summer.
Nearby day trips worth doing: Celje Castle and Celje old town, the Laško spa and brewery, and the scenic hop-growing countryside of the Savinja Valley — Celje Castle is my personal favorite.
