Backpacking in Baxter Theatre Centre
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The foyer hums with students and ticket-holders, and the first thing I noticed on arrival was the smell of coffee drifting out of the Backstage Cafe while a rehearsal thudded behind a wall. Baxter Theatre Centre sits in Rondebosch, in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, below the University of Cape Town campus. Skip it if you want a landmark photo; the building is plain brick. Go for the stage work, which is sharp and often cheap. Check the programme and book before you arrive.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #17 attraction in South Africa
What sets this place apart

Baxter Theatre Centre gives you a side of South Africa that the beaches and mountain viewpoints never show: the country's stories told by its own actors. Its three stages, the big Concert Hall, the Theatre and the small Studio, host new local plays, Xhosa and Afrikaans productions, jazz and comedy. That means you can sit among Capetonians at a fraction of the price of a major tourist show. The theatre also has a long record of anti-apartheid-era drama, so a night here carries real cultural weight. Because it shares a university suburb with student cafes, it is easy to pair with dinner.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Baxter Theatre Centre

  1. The Theatre auditorium: the mid-sized house, where much of the new South African drama premieres, with a close and attentive audience.
  2. The Concert Hall: the largest space, used for orchestral concerts, dance and touring productions, with proper tiered seating and good sound.
  3. The Studio: a small black-box room for experimental pieces, stand-up and student work, where you sit a few meters from the performers.
  4. The Baxter Zabalaza Theatre Festival: a festival of new work from emerging South African artists, a good way to see many voices in a short stretch.
  5. The Backstage Cafe: the foyer cafe for pre-show coffee or a light meal, and a place to watch the crowd mix of students, regulars and actors.
  6. The Baxter's Christmas pantomime: a family-friendly annual tradition with local jokes and audience shouting,

  7. The foyer exhibitions: rotating art and photo displays by local artists, free to look at before curtain.
Baxter Theatre Centre sells out for festival nights and the pantomime, so book those seats ahead; most other shows can be bought at the box office on the day.

FAQTraveler FAQ

A full day is only needed if you add a matinee and a walk around the University of Cape Town campus. Most shows start around 7:30 pm or 8 pm, and some run about 90 minutes.
Baxter Theatre Centre is worth the ticket if you want live local theater, which is usually US$8 to 25 for most shows. It stages South African drama, comedy and music that you won’t find on typical tourist itineraries. Student discounts and cheaper matinees cut costs further, and it has several stages, so pick a production that suits your taste.

An Uber from the city takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs US$6 to 10, while the Metrorail Southern Line stops at Rondebosch station, a short walk away. MyCiTi buses and minibus taxis also run along the main road, though Uber is safer after evening shows.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

The usual mistake at Baxter Theatre Centre is turning up on the night and finding the show you wanted already sold out. Check the programme a week ahead, book the Studio or Theatre, and leave time for dinner in Rondebosch beforehand.
