Backpacking in Origins Centre
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #18
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

I paid about US$2 for a flat white at the café, then carried it past a case of 75,000-year-old engraved ochre. Origins Centre sits on the Wits University campus in Braamfontein, in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. The rock art and San sections are the reason to come, and the human evolution displays are solid but dense. Skip the gift shop unless you want crafts. It’s small, quiet, and fair value. Enter through the campus gate on Enoch Sontonga Avenue.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #18 attraction in South Africa
The unique appeal for travelers

Origins Centre gives you the deep-time backstory to everything else on a South Africa route, from Cradle of Humankind fossils to the Kalahari. Its rock art collection comes from researchers at Wits, so the interpretation is detailed and current. The San trance and healing material explains images you will later see on cave walls in the Drakensberg or Cederberg. It also takes only a couple of hours, which makes it an easy, affordable Braamfontein stop beside street art, cafés and the university campus.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. Human evolution galleries: casts and displays trace early hominid fossils found in southern Africa, a good primer before visiting Sterkfontein.
  2. Blombos Cave ochre engravings: replicas of cross-hatched pieces about 75,000 years old, among the earliest known symbolic marks.
  3. Rock art displays: panels and reproductions from the Wits Rock Art Research Institute, showing eland, human figures and shamanic scenes.
  4. San trance dance exhibit: explains how altered states shaped the imagery, with the San voice central.
  5. Click language listening stations: hear Khoisan languages, whose clicks are unlike anything in everyday Johannesburg.
  6. Ostrich eggshell beads and early jewelry: small objects showing how long people have decorated themselves.
  7. Origins Centre café and craft shop: a pause for coffee and locally made

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Winter (May to August): Dry, sunny days of 17 to 20°C (63 to 68°F), but nights drop to 3 to 6°C (37 to 43°F). Galleries stay quiet and Johannesburg is cheapest.
  • Summer (November to March): Afternoon thunderstorms, highs of 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F), and longer evenings. Wits campus is busier with visiting groups.
  • School holidays: Weekday school groups fill the exhibits, especially in April, June to July, and September to October.
  • Spring and autumn: Mild 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), clear skies, and easy access.
Visit on a weekday morning to have the rock art and fossil displays mostly to yourself.

🛏️ Where to stay? How to pick the right area

Braamfontein is the easiest area, because Origins Centre sits on the Wits University campus on its edge, a short walk away. It has student cafes, street art, and a lively weekend market at Neighbourgoods-style spots, so you will meet other travelers easily. Stick to well-lit main streets after dark and use ride-hailing at night. Parktown and Melville are calmer alternatives. Melville has a relaxed bar and restaurant strip popular with solo travelers, and a short Uber ride connects it to the campus. Rosebank suits those wanting malls and the Gautrain station, with safer evening walking.

👛 Costs (as of 22 October 2026)Typical daily expenses

Origins Centre costs about US$27 per day for a budget backpacker, with entry itself under US$10. Prices are paid in rand.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Origins Centre hides its best material on the upper floor, where the rock art replicas and the San testimony sit, and many first-timers rush past them toward the fossils. I would head there first, then double back. Skip the gift shop until the end.
