Backpacking in Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #19
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The photo of Hector Pieterson, the boy carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo, shows only one moment, and the memorial stands where the 1976 student march was stopped, not where he was shot. It sits in Orlando West, Soweto, in the southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The museum is small and can feel packed when tour groups arrive. Entry is modest. I expected a gallery of photographs, but the recorded voices of students in the audio rooms stopped me mid-step. Skip the souvenir stalls and follow the pavement of the plaza to the water memorial.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #19 attraction in South Africa
Why visitors keep coming back

Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum is the clearest place in South Africa to understand the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising, when schoolchildren protested being taught in Afrikaans. You stand a short walk from where the march was halted by police, and that proximity does what a textbook cannot. It also anchors any Soweto day, sitting a few minutes from Vilakazi Street, where Mandela and Tutu both lived. Allow an hour or two inside; the weight of it justifies the time.

Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum sits a short walk from the street where the march was stopped, and many first-timers skip that stretch outside. I would walk it before going in, then read the museum’s testimonies with the real distances fresh in your mind.
