Backpacking in Geumosan
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

You have to choose at Geumosan: do you just ride the cable car to the lake and temple, or grind your way up the stone steps to earn the summit? That choice matters, because this mountain in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, feels completely different if you sweat for the views. Geumosan is a compact, punchy hike: steep stairs, rocky sections, and a waterfall and reservoir that break up the climb, with big valley views near the top. It’s easy to reach by bus or taxi from Gumi Station, so it’s a classic weekend target. Shorter and more urban-facing than Jirisan or Gayasan, it’s less wild, more “after-work leg burner,” but still delivers a real mountain payoff.

  • Jagged granite outcrops and photo-ready rock formations — Geumosan’s exposed granite ribs and ledges create dramatic silhouettes and easy scrambling sections, so you get that rugged, cliffy mountain look without technical gear.
  • Hidden temples and small hermitages — Scattered along the trails are compact temple sites and stone shrines tucked into the rock faces; they add cultural pause-points and give the hike a quieter, reflective vibe you don’t find on purely natural trails.

  • Forest ridgelines with birdlife and peaceful streams — Long stretches of shaded trail along the ridges and small stream crossings mean lots of birdwatching, pleasant rest spots, and a more relaxed, green-sidewalk feel compared with steeper, rock-only hikes.
