Backpacking in Seoraksan Ulsanbawi Rock Trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 28, 2026

You have to choose, standing at the park map in Sokcho: burn your legs on Ulsanbawi’s endless stairs, or save your energy for Seoraksan’s gentler valleys and waterfalls. That choice matters, because Ulsanbawi is short and brutal, and it will dictate how the rest of your day feels. The trail sits in Seoraksan National Park, near Sokcho on Korea’s northeast coast, and it punches straight up from the main park entrance. Ulsanbawi is all carved stone steps, steel railings, and a final exposed staircase that makes your calves scream, but the payoff is a jagged granite ridge with wide-open views over Sokcho, the East Sea, and the surrounding peaks. It’s easy to reach by bus from Sokcho, which also means crowds and a slightly theme-park vibe compared with quieter routes like Dinosaur Ridge or Daecheongbong. Still, for a half-day hit of effort-versus-reward, Ulsanbawi is hard to beat.

  • Steep stone steps, narrow ledges and chain-assisted scrambles — The route’s carved stairs and iron handrails turn the hike into a hands-on scramble; it’s part scenic walk, part adrenaline section, which is exactly why it feels different from gentler trails.
