Backpacking in Montseny Natural Park
👀 For curious travelersnational park ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Montseny is where you get Pyrenees-style forest and ridge hiking without losing half a day to transport. It sits in Catalonia, northeast Spain, about an hour inland from Barcelona. For backpackers, it’s a solid “low-drama” base: good waymarked trails, oak and beech forests, boar and birds if you’re patient, and usually no entrance fee. Access by train plus bus is workable but not seamless, and weekends can feel busy near trailheads. Wild camping is restricted, so you’re looking at campsites, rural guesthouses, or cheapish hostals in nearby villages. Compared with Garrotxa’s volcanic landscapes or the higher drama of the Pyrenees parks, Montseny is tamer but far more convenient; I use it when I want a real hike, then a shower and a cheap menu del día the same evening back in the city.

  • Santa Fe del Montseny and its beech groves — mossy streams, cool shade and crystal springs around the little Santa Fe area; perfect for short, peaceful walks and especially magical in autumn or after rain.
  • Ancient chestnut and mixed forests — the park’s real backbone: altitude-driven vegetation zones (Mediterranean to Eurosiberian) give you everything from holm oak to beech and giant chestnuts, and the colors in fall are stunning.
  • Wildlife and birdwatching — you’ll likely spot wild boar, roe deer, foxes and a healthy cast of raptors and woodland birds; go early or late, keep quiet and you’ll see more than you expect.
