Your first real decision with Minneriya is simple but important: do you pay for a dedicated Minneriya safari, or gamble on Kaudulla or Hurulu instead, chasing better elephant numbers that day. That choice matters, because you’re basically betting your time and jeep money on where the herds decide to feed. Minneriya sits in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, near Habarana and Polonnaruwa, right in the Cultural Triangle backpacker circuit. The park is mostly about jeep safaris around the reservoir, not hiking; scenery is open grassland and scrub, great for spotting elephants but less dramatic than the hill-country parks. It’s easy to reach by bus plus tuk-tuk, but entrance and jeep fees add up, especially in high season and it can feel crowded with jeeps. No camping inside, and budget stays are in nearby Habarana, not at the gate.
