Backpacking in Udawalawe
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 13, 2026

Your first real fork in the road at Udawalawe is simple but important: do you treat it as a quick in-and-out safari stop, or do you slow down and base yourself there for a night or two. That choice decides whether you burn money and energy on rushed jeeps… or actually get value out of the park. Udawalawe sits in south-central Sri Lanka, roughly between Ella and the south coast, so it’s a natural pivot point on a backpacking loop.

The park itself is dry, open scrub and grassland, famous for elephants, not for dramatic hikes. You’re in a jeep, not on foot; if you want real trekking, you’re better off in Horton Plains or the Knuckles. Pros: reliable elephant sightings, easy access by bus, plenty of cheap guesthouses just outside the gate. Cons: sunrise and sunset drives get crowded, entrance and jeep fees add up fast, and the scenery is less varied than Yala or Wilpattu. I treat Udawalawe as a focused, one- or two-drive wildlife stop, not a multi-day wilderness escape.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while exploring Udawalawe

  • Massive elephant sightings — Udawalawe is famous for big, regular herds of Asian elephants grazing openly on the plains, so sightings feel intimate rather than the “blink-and-you-miss-it” encounters you get elsewhere.
  • Elephant Transit Home — a nearby rescue and rehabilitation center for orphaned calves. It’s educational and emotional: you can watch feeding and learn how calves are prepared for release into the park.
  • Udawalawe Reservoir and Walawe River shoreline — broad water and shoreline scenery draws wildlife to drink and bathe; golden-hour light here is wonderful for photos and for watching birds and mammals gather.
  • Birdlife and wetlands — wetlands, marshes and open water host lots of waterbirds and raptors: storks, herons, kingfishers and eagles are common picks for anyone into birding.

  • Open grasslands and scrub habitats — the park’s mosaic of grassland, scrub and marsh sets it apart from Sri Lanka’s dense rainforests, making wildlife more visible and landscapes wide and photogenic.
  • Other large mammals — beyond elephants you’ll see water buffalo, chital (spotted deer), sambar and often wild boar; these species congregate around waterholes, making jeep drives reliably rewarding.
  • Sunset and safari photography — short safari routes and big skies give you great framing for silhouettes, reflections on the reservoir and close animal portraits without spending a fortune on long trips.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The dry season from May to September is your best bet. Rainfall drops significantly, making jeep safaris smoother and less muddy. Avoid the monsoon months of October to January when heavy rains can flood trails and limit wildlife sightings.
  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover around 30-35°C (86-95°F) during the dry season, which can feel intense but manageable with early starts. Nights cool down to about 20-24°C (68-75°F), offering some relief. The wet season is slightly cooler but stickier due to humidity.
  • Daylight Hours: Expect roughly 11 to 12 hours of daylight year-round. Sunrise is around 6 AM, so plan early morning safaris to catch animals at their most active and avoid midday heat.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry months offer better chances to spot elephants near waterholes. The wet season brings lush greenery but animals spread out, making sightings less predictable.
  • Price Fluctuations: Safari rates and accommodation prices spike during the dry season and peak months. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you a decent chunk without sacrificing wildlife encounters.
Pro-tip: Arrive just before the dry season kicks in to enjoy fewer crowds, better prices, and a landscape transitioning from lush to accessible—perfect for a balanced backpacking experience.

Another solid choice is The Eco Lodge, which emphasizes sustainability. It’s a bit more rustic but provides a genuine connection to the environment. Plus, the staff can help arrange guided tours, ensuring you don’t miss out on the best spots.

Be mindful of transportation costs. Taxis can add up, so consider staying closer to the park to save both time and money for those unforgettable safari moments.
