Most people either skip Wellawaya as “just a junction town” or expect some secret mini-Ella. It’s neither. Sitting in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, south of Ella and north of the southern plains, Wellawaya is a dusty, practical crossroads with rice fields and low hills glowing gold at sunset. For backpackers, it works best as a cheap, no-frills base or a one-night stop between hill country and the coast, with easy bus links fanning out in every direction. The town itself is busy rather than pretty: traffic, hardware shops, a few simple bakeries and kottu spots, a morning market where you smell curry leaves and ripe bananas before you see them.
