Backpacking in Höga Kusten Trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | last update: 22 April, 2026

Most people hear “Höga Kusten Trail” and picture a flat coastal stroll between cute fishing villages; then they hit the first steep, rooty climb and realize this is a real leg-burner. The trail runs along Sweden’s High Coast in Ångermanland, between Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik on the Gulf of Bothnia, where the land is literally still rising after the last Ice Age. It’s about 130 km of constant up-and-down over rocky hills, pine forest, and bare summits that drop into the sea, with long forest slogs between the headline viewpoints. Scenery-wise, it beats most nearby coastal walks and feels wilder than the more polished archipelago routes around Stockholm, but it’s less dramatic than the big mountain trails up in Lapland. Public transport is a win: trains and buses make it easy to reach several trailheads. Expect sweat, slippery stones, and some road sections—but also red cabins, cold beers in tiny harbors, and big Baltic horizons when you earn the high points.

  • Skuleberget & Slåttdalsskrevan — a must-see: a steep granite ridge with a dramatic cleft you can peer into (and scramble around). The views from the top are raw and immediate — cliffs, sea and forests — and there’s even via ferrata/climbing options if you want to make it more than a photo stop.
  • Högakustenbron (High Coast Bridge) — the region’s landmark. Seeing the suspension bridge span the wide Ångermanälven estuary gives you a real sense of scale and the unique interplay between sea and rising land; it’s a great sunrise/sunset framing point and an unmistakable High Coast postcard.

Walk them and you’re literally crossing land that’s been rising out of the sea over millennia — geology that looks spectacular and is easy to read with your feet.
  • Archipelago panoramas and wildlife — from cliff edges you’ll catch countless skerries and small islands stretching into the sea. Keep an eye out for white-tailed sea eagles, seals along rocky shores and seabirds wheeling around the rocks — wildlife encounters here feel wild but accessible.
  • Coastal villages, boathouses and lighthouses — scattered small harbours, red boathouses and old fishing sites give the trail a lived-in, cultural texture. They’re perfect spots for a break, a fika, or to imagine how people have made a life off this steep, beautiful coast for generations.

  • Weather: The trail shines from late May through September. Early summer brings cool, crisp air and occasional rain, while July and August offer warmer, more stable conditions. Avoid the shoulder months if you want to dodge mud and soggy boots.

  • Temperature: Expect highs around 15-22°C (59-72°F) in summer, perfect for sweating without overheating. Nights can dip to 8-12°C (46-54°F), so pack layers. Spring and fall are chillier, often flirting with freezing at night.

  • Crowds: July and August draw the most hikers, especially on weekends. For solitude, aim for late May or early September when the trail thins out but the weather still cooperates.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens up swimming in the Baltic and kayaking alongside the cliffs. Spring and fall offer mushroom foraging and vibrant foliage, adding a different flavor to the trek.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and ferry prices spike in peak summer. Booking early can save you, but traveling just before or after high season often nets better deals and less hassle.

Pro-tip: Start your hike in early June to catch the tail end of spring’s freshness with fewer people, then ride the surge of daylight and warmth as the trail wakes up around you.
