- Shifting skerries and post-glacial uplift: The coastline here is literally being born — land uplift pushes new islands and sand ridges up out of the sea, so the archipelago’s shape changes on human timescales. It’s great to see raw geological processes in action and to walk across recently exposed beach ridges and rock flats.
- Birdlife and spring/fall migration hotspots: Wide sea meadows and sheltered bays are stopping points for migratory waders and waterfowl; in spring and autumn you can see big concentrations of birds and lots of activity in the shallows. Bring binoculars — it’s a quiet place for serious birdwatching.
- Seal sightings and marine life: Grey seals haul out on rocky skerries and sandbanks; if you’re patient from a safe distance (or in a kayak), you’ll often spot them lazing

- Seal sightings and marine life: Grey seals haul out on rocky skerries and sandbanks; if you’re patient from a safe distance (or in a kayak), you’ll often spot them lazing or popping their heads up between islands. The shallow, brackish waters also host interesting shore creatures and seaweeds.
- Expansive sandy beaches and sea meadows: Unlike the classic granite cliffs farther south, Haparanda’s islands have long beaches, dune-like ridges and lush sea meadows that light up with flowers in summer. Perfect for a lazy shoreline walk, picnics, or photographing wide open horizons.
- Paddle-friendly channels and island hopping: The archipelago’s many narrow passages and sheltered bays make it ideal for sea-kayaking or small-boat trips — you can hop between tiny islets, find secluded coves, and camp on soft sand. Navigation is straightforward but shallow in places, so keep charts/local advice handy.
- Winter ice sculpture and northern light moods: In winter and spring, pack-ice and ice ridges create dramatic, otherworldly landscapes — huge pressure ridges, frosty shelves and clear blue light. On cold nights you may also get glimpses of the northern lights; in summer the days are very long and the light stays soft late into the evening.
