Backpacking in Al-Lajat Trail
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 4, 2026

Your boot scrapes black rock and the sound snaps across the empty basalt plain; heat shimmers off broken lava, dust sticks to your ankles, and the wind smells like dry stone and wild thyme crushed under your tread. This is the Al‑Lajat Trail in southern Syria, running through the volcanic plateau north of Daraa, and it feels more like crossing an ancient battlefield than a casual day hike. The route is rough, slow, and confusing in places, with jagged rock fields, collapsed farm terraces, and almost no shade, so it’s tougher than its modest length suggests and absolutely not ideal for beginners or anyone relying on clear waymarks. When access is possible, public transport only gets you vaguely close; you usually need a local ride to the trailhead, which makes it more of a mission than better-known Syrian walks like the easier, greener slopes around Bloudan or the coastal hills near Kassab. But if you like raw, harsh scenery and the sense that you’re walking through a frozen lava sea dotted with abandoned stone houses, Al‑Lajat hits a very specific, very intense nerve.

The unique appeal for travelers

The Al-Lajat Trail in Syria is a backpacker’s playground, where the grit of the terrain meets the beauty of the landscape. You’ll navigate through rugged basalt formations, each step revealing a new vista that makes the effort worthwhile. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts; you’ll sweat it out on the trail, but the rewarding views of the surrounding valleys and ancient ruins are your payoff.

Accessing the trail is a breeze with public transport options that drop you right at the trailhead. Plus, it’s a low-cost adventure—perfect for those on a budget. You can tailor your hike to fit your pace, with flexible distances that cater to both the ambitious and the casual explorer.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • Basalt Plateau and Lava Fields — The whole trail runs over a black, jagged lava landscape you don’t see on most hikes. Walking on basalt slabs, fissures and little plateaus feels almost lunar; the textures, sound underfoot and stark contrast with the sky make for unusual photos and a different kind of trail rhythm.
  • Rock-cut Villages and Cave Dwellings — Ancient homes and shelters hewn straight into the basalt are scattered across the plateau. Crawling through doorways and narrow alleys carved from stone gives a real sense of continuous habitation across millennia — my personal favorite, because it feels like archaeology you can walk through rather than just look at.
  • Byzantine and Roman Ruins — Small ruined churches, stone arches and old cisterns pop up between the rocks; you’ll find remnants

  • Byzantine and Roman Ruins — Small ruined churches, stone arches and old cisterns pop up between the rocks; you’ll find remnants of masonry and carved details tucked into corners of the plateau. They’re intimate, low-key ruins rather than big tourist sites, so you can linger and imagine daily life centuries ago without crowds.
  • Wide Panoramas over the Hauran and Jabal al-Druze — From higher points the plateau opens onto sweeping views of the Hauran plains and the silhouette of Jabal al-Druze. Sunsets here throw long shadows across the black rock and are worth the uphill for the light show alone.
  • Spring Wildflowers, Steppe Birds and Night Skies — In season the basalt cracks light up with carpets of wildflowers and singing birds; you’ll also spot lizards and other desert life. Far from city lights, the place is excellent for starry nights — quiet, cold air and constellations spread like a roof over the lava fields.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Weather: Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring the most stable weather. Expect dry, crisp air with minimal rain, perfect for pounding the rugged volcanic terrain without slipping or overheating.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover around 20-25°C (68-77°F) in spring and fall, ideal for sustained hiking. Summers scorch with highs pushing 35°C (95°F), turning the trail into a furnace. Winters dip to near freezing at night, with daytime temps around 10°C (50°F), demanding serious layering.

  • Daylight Hours: Spring and autumn offer balanced daylight—roughly 11 to 13 hours—enough to cover long stretches without rushing or camping in the dark.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring bursts with wildflowers and migrating birds, enriching the hike’s sensory payoff. Autumn brings harvest festivals in nearby villages, a chance to refuel with local fare after a hard day’s walk.

  • Price Fluctuations: Off-peak seasons (winter and summer) see lower accommodation and guide prices, but the trade-off is harsher conditions. Spring and autumn demand a slight premium but deliver the best overall experience.

Pro-tip: Time your hike for early spring to catch the trail waking up from winter’s grip—cool air, blooming landscapes, and a quiet trail that feels like it’s yours alone.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

The Al-Lajat Trail offers a rugged yet rewarding experience, where the terrain shifts from rocky outcrops to smooth paths, demanding your attention and respect. Weather can change quickly; mornings might start cool, but the sun can blaze by midday. Dress in layers and pack a lightweight rain jacket just in case.

Footing can be tricky, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are a must. Navigation is straightforward, but keep a map handy; the trail can twist unexpectedly. Wildlife is present, but encounters are rare. If you spot a snake, give it space and keep moving.

Timing is key—early starts help you beat the heat and enjoy the tranquility of the trail. Embrace the challenge, and when you reach that panoramic view, the effort will feel worth every step.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on hiking the Al-Lajat Trail

The Al-Lajat Trail is a wild ride through ancient volcanic landscapes, where every step feels like a dance with history. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping views that make the sweat worth it. But be ready for the rugged terrain; it’s not a stroll in the park. Bring sturdy boots and a sense of adventure. The grit of the trail is part of its charm, but it demands respect. Embrace it, and you’ll find magic in the challenge.

✈️ When did I visit Syria?
As part of my trip to Jordan in August 2004, I also visited Syria, which sadly changed for the worse soon afterwards.
