Backpacking in Mount Hermon Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 4, 2026

Most people assume the Mount Hermon Trail is some polished ski-resort stroll; it isn’t. On the Syrian side of Jabal al‑Shaykh, up in the far southwest near the Lebanese border, the route feels raw and military-adjacent, with checkpoints, wind, and a constant sense of edge. The payoff is huge: big, open ridgelines, snow in season, and long views over the Golan. It’s long, exposed, and moderately tough, with loose rock that punishes lazy footwork. Public transport to trailheads is awkward and patchy; you usually stitch together shared taxis and hitchhiking, unlike more straightforward access around Qalamoun or the coastal ranges. I like it for the high‑mountain mood, but it’s not the first Syrian hike I’d hand to a nervous beginner.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Summit Ridge and Panoramic View — The ridge gives an almost ridiculous 360° sweep: valleys, ridgelines and, on a very clear day, the faint blue of the Mediterranean far off. It’s that wide-open, high-up feeling you don’t get on most Middle Eastern hikes—my personal favorite.
  2. Alpine Meadows and Wildflower Slopes — In spring the slopes light up with carpets of tiny orchids, irises and other alpine species. The contrast between these lush pockets and the scrubby lowlands below is what makes Hermon feel like a little European mountain dropped into the Levant.
  3. Lingering Snowfields and Unique Microclimate — Snow can hang around well into spring, creating sudden patches of white amid green. That mix of snow, sun and sharp mountain air is rare for this latitude and gives the trail a real “alpine”

  4. Clear Springs, Streams and Rocky Gorges — Cold, spring-fed streams carve neat pools and small cascades; they’re perfect for a refreshing stop and bring out lots of life you wouldn’t expect up here. The water changes the whole vibe—smoother boulders, moss, and the constant trickle underfoot.
  5. Bird Migration and Mountain Wildlife — Hermon is a corridor for migratory raptors and has local mountain species—watch for circling eagles, kestrels and the chattering alpine birds. It’s a quiet, rewarding place for wildlife spotting if you slow down and listen.

Mount Hermon Trail is a wild ride. The thrill of conquering those rocky paths is matched only by the panoramic views that stretch for miles—trust me, they’ll take your breath away. But here’s the kicker: the weather can turn on a dime. Be ready for sudden storms or intense sun. Pack smart, and you’ll savor every moment. The challenge makes the reward that much sweeter.
