Backpacking in Palmyra Oasis Trail
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 3, 2026

You have to decide one thing before you touch the Palmyra Oasis Trail: are you here to move through a living ruin under a brutal sun, or to chase a romantic desert fantasy that never really existed. That choice matters, because this trail, skirting the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria, gives you both history and harshness in the same stride. The hike itself is a moderate out‑and‑back across baked sand and low, stony hills, threading past palm groves and the skeletons of Roman colonnades; the scenery is wide, dry, and honest, more ochre and dust than postcard gold. It’s not long, but the heat and exposure punch above their weight. Public transport to Palmyra has always been patchy even in good years, so reaching the trailhead usually means private wheels, unlike easier-access walks near Damascus or along the coastal hills, which feel gentler, greener, and far less intense.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Ancient Palmyra Ruins Viewpoint — A short climb up from the oasis gives a sweeping perspective where crumbling columns, temples and funerary towers sit framed by palms and desert. It’s special because you see archaeology and landscape at once: the human scale of an old city against an endless sandscape. Be mindful—these remains are fragile, and the view is as much about atmosphere as about details.
  2. Palm Groves and Date Gardens — Walking through the shaded groves feels almost tropical after the open desert. The dense palms, hand-tended plots and the small irrigation channels that feed them are a living contrast to the surrounding barrenness. It’s a rare pocket of green that underlines why settlements survived here for millennia.

  3. Sunset over the Oasis Ridge — The light at dusk turns the sand and stone a dozen tones of orange and purple while silhouettes of palms and ruins sharpen against the sky. That calm, cinematic golden hour is my personal favorite — nothing makes the place feel more timeless than watching the sun drop behind the plain.
  4. Old Caravan Route Traces — Parts of the trail follow the faint lines of ancient trade tracks and pass the occasional way-station ruins. Hiking this stretch gives a real sense of movement through history: you’re following routes that connected cities and deserts for centuries, which you can’t really get from a museum placard.
  5. Oasis Wildlife & Birdwatching — The moisture and shade attract species you don’t expect in the desert: small passerines, waders at wet spots, lizards sunning on rocks and sometimes nocturnal mammals. It’s quietly rewarding for anyone who likes small, lively encounters rather than dramatic sightings.

  • Crowds: The trail sees a spike in visitors during spring festivals and autumn holidays, which can dilute the solitude. Off-peak seasons offer a quieter, more intimate experience with the desert’s raw edge.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring brings blooming desert flora and local cultural events, adding layers to your trek. Summer’s heat shuts down most activities, while winter’s coolness invites longer, slower exploration.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees climb during peak spring and autumn months. Visiting in shoulder seasons can save you cash without sacrificing the trail’s core experience.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail at dawn in spring or fall—cool air, soft light, and the desert waking up make every step feel earned and every view a reward.
