- Iskanderkul Lake (the main lake) — A high-mountain, turquoise lake sitting at about 2,195 m, hemmed in by steep, pine-covered slopes. The color and the mirrored cliffs are the obvious reason you stay longer than planned. It’s also wrapped in the Alexander the Great legend, which makes for a good story while boiling dinner.
- Small and Big basins (the two-part lake) — Iskanderkul actually has two connected basins separated by a narrow spit/peninsula. Walk between them for different light and mood: the “small” side is sheltered and intimate, the big side opens to dramatic ridgelines.
- Short ridge viewpoint hikes — There are several steep 30-90 minute climbs from the lakeshore that deliver panoramic views over the Fann/Zeravshan ranges. Perfect for sunrise or late-afternoon light; you’ll trade

- Waterfalls and feeding gorges — Small cascades and side gorges pour into the lake; the walkups to these falls are easy day hikes and worth it for close-up sound, spray, and a cooler microclimate. Great for photos and a quick barefoot dip in summer.
- Alpine meadows and wildflower slopes — In summer the hills around the lake explode with wildflowers and butterflies. It’s also where you’ll see marmots sunning on rocks and hear the distant jangle of shepherds’ flocks — very pleasant for relaxed wandering or a picnic.
- Wildlife and birdwatching — Early morning and dusk are best to spot waterfowl on the lake, raptors riding thermals, and occasional mountain ungulates higher up. Binoculars reward patience; quiet trekking increases your chances.
- Camping on the lakeshore and night skies — If you camp, you’ll get mirror reflections at dawn and a properly dark sky at night — the Milky Way is unmistakable. There are simple guesthouses nearby if you prefer a roof, but a lakeside bivvy is unforgettable (and cold, so bring a good bag).
