Serengeti National Park hands you one of the planet's densest wildlife shows without a single permit hurdle beyond the gate. It sits in the north of Tanzania, a few hours' drive west of Ngorongoro and running up to the Kenyan border, where it continues as the Maasai Mara. Here is how it works: walking is banned inside the park because lions, buffalo and elephants roam freely, so you explore by vehicle. Experienced travelers split a safari jeep with other budget travelers from Arusha instead of paying for a private one. The plains stretch flat and gold, with granite kopjes breaking the horizon, and the wildebeest herds follow the rains in a loop you can chase.
