- Ngorongoro Crater floor — A huge, perfectly formed caldera packed with wildlife: lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo and even resident black rhino. It’s basically a natural amphitheatre where animals are unusually concentrated, and the scenery (wide grasslands rimmed by high crater walls) is unforgettable at sunrise.
- Empakaai Crater — A quieter crater you can hike into; a deep, forested bowl with a seasonal soda lake that sometimes turns pink with flamingos. The rim walk gives dramatic panoramic views, and the trail is short but steep, rewarding hikers with solitude and great birding.
- Olmoti Crater and waterfall hikes — Rugged, green and less touristy than the main crater. Olmoti’s rim walks lead to viewpoints and a hidden waterfall; good for a proper hike and to see montane forest species

- Lerai Forest — A stand of tall fig and avocado trees on the crater floor that attracts elephants, buffalo and lots of birds. The contrast between the shady forest and open plains makes for some excellent, close-up wildlife moments and photos.
- Lake Magadi (soda lakes) — Shallow, alkaline lakes dotted in parts of the conservation area where flamingos and other waterbirds gather in dramatic numbers. The mineral-streaked shores and steaming springs give the area a lunar, otherworldly look.
- Ndutu area — wildebeest calving (seasonal) — If you time it (roughly late January-March) you can witness massive wildebeest calving and the predator frenzy that follows. It’s raw, chaotic wildlife action and one of the best predator-viewing windows in East Africa.
- Crater rim views and Maasai highlands — Drive or hike the rim for sweeping views into the crater and across the highlands, then drop into nearby Maasai villages to see pastoral landscapes and traditional bomas. The mix of geology, sweeping vistas and living culture makes the highlands uniquely memorable.
