Your toes hit the water and it’s… surprisingly chilly, while a kid’s inflatable flamingo bumps your leg and someone’s grilling fish so close you can taste the smoke. That’s Akyaka Beach, on the Gulf of Gökova in southwest Türkiye, just north of Marmaris. For backpackers, it’s a curious mix: shallow, glassy water that’s great for lazy swims but useless for real surf, clean-ish sand that fills up fast with weekend crowds, and a laid-back, slightly boho vibe powered by kite-surfers and Istanbul escapees. It’s cheaper and more characterful than Ölüdeniz, less wild than Datça’s coves, with plenty of gözleme stalls and basic pensions a short, flip-flop walk away.
