Backpacking in Artvin
👌 Worth visitingcity ranked #18
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 10, 2026

Ten years ago Artvin felt like a border outpost with tea gardens, old men playing backgammon, and almost no foreign backpacks; now it’s still quiet, but there’s Wi‑Fi in the pensions and minivans full of Turkish hikers on weekends. Tucked into Türkiye’s far northeast, near Georgia, it’s all steep streets, forested valleys, and a compact center with a few mosques, Atatürk statues, and tea houses rather than big-ticket sights. For backpackers, the payoff is landscape and local life, not museums or nightlife. It’s cheaper and calmer than coastal cities, safer than it looks from the dramatic cliffs, and less social than places like Trabzon or Kars unless you speak some Turkish or latch onto local trekking groups.

Compared to the quieter, more residential neighborhoods on the outskirts, the city center pulses with energy and convenience—perfect for solo backpackers who want to maximize interaction without losing their footing. Venturing too far out means fewer social opportunities and more reliance on limited transport, which eats into your time and budget. Stick central, and you’re playing the logistics game smart.

🚌 Getting aroundMoving around without the hassle

Artvin moves at its own rhythm—less a strict timetable and more a dance between mountain time and local intuition. Here, schedules exist but bend to the terrain and temperament of the day. You’ll find that the city’s pulse is dictated by the winding roads and the steady flow of people who know when to push and when to pause. This isn’t a place where you race the clock; it’s where you learn to read the subtle cues of transit and terrain, making every choice a strategic move in your travel game.

  • Dolmuş (Shared Minibus): Runs roughly from 7 AM to 8 PM, fares hover around 5-10 TRY, balancing speed and cost. It’s the backbone of local transit—fast enough to cover Artvin’s hilly streets but packed tight, so comfort takes a backseat to efficiency.

  • Local Buses: Scheduled but flexible, these run from early morning until early evening, costing about 3-6 TRY. Slower than dolmuş but more spacious, they’re your best bet for a budget-friendly, moderately comfortable ride across longer routes.

  • Walking: The ultimate zero-cost option, perfect for exploring Artvin’s compact center and riverside paths. It’s slower but gives you unmatched access to the city’s character—every step reveals a new detail missed by faster transit.

  • Taxi: Available 24/7 but pricey, expect to pay 50-70 TRY for short trips. Offers maximum comfort and flexibility, ideal if you’re short on time or traveling with gear, but it’s a clear trade-off against budget.

👛 Costs (as of 4 March 2026)What things cost and how to budget

Backpacking in Artvin, Türkiye, offers a fascinating balance between affordability and authentic experience, but knowing where your money goes helps you play the system smartly.
  • Dorm Accommodation (High Season): Expect to pay around €10-15 per night. High season pushes prices up slightly due to demand, but dorms remain basic and functional, often family-run guesthouses rather than large hostels.
  • Dorm Accommodation (Off-Season): Prices drop to about €6-10. Off-season is quieter, so you can negotiate better deals or find more personal attention from hosts, which adds comfort without extra cost.
  • Meals: Local eateries serve hearty meals for €3-6. Street food and small cafes offer filling portions of regional dishes like kuymak or gözleme, keeping your food budget low while tasting genuine flavors.

  • Local Transport: Minibuses and shared taxis run routes around Artvin and nearby villages for about €0.50-1 per trip. They’re frequent but expect a bit of a wait and a lively atmosphere.
  • City Transport Pass: Artvin doesn’t have a formal city transport pass system. Instead, pay per ride on minibuses or taxis, which keeps costs flexible but requires a bit more planning if you’re hopping around.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Nature parks, small museums, and cultural sites typically charge €1-3. Many hiking trails are free, but guided tours or special excursions can cost €10-20, depending on the length and service.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Budget around €2-5 daily for essentials like bottled water, snacks, or occasional treats. Internet cafes or SIM cards are affordable, usually under €5 for decent data packages.

All told, you’re looking at a daily budget between €15 and €35, depending on season and how much you lean into comfort or adventure. Artvin rewards those who embrace its slower pace and local rhythms, where a few euros saved on transport or meals can be reinvested in experiences that linger longer in memory.

Watch for common scams, such as overly friendly locals offering unsolicited help that leads to inflated prices. A confident demeanor and a polite “no, thank you” can defuse most situations. Embrace the experience, but stay sharp; it’s all part of the adventure.
