Backpacking in Lake Van
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 24, 2026

Your boots crunch on pale, salty gravel while a cold, almost metallic wind comes off the huge, blue-grey lake and smells faintly of sulfur and wet stone; somewhere behind you, a shepherd’s dog barks, and the only other sound is your stove hissing. Lake Van National Park, in eastern Türkiye near the city of Van, is big-sky, semi-arid, and low on hand-holding. Trails are more “sheep path plus guesswork” than waymarked routes, but that’s part of the appeal if you like reading terrain and don’t mind checking your bearings often. The scenery is stark rather than lush: volcanic slopes, snow-dusted peaks in the distance, and that enormous alkaline lake that looks swimmable but feels icy and strange on your skin. Wildlife is mostly birds and skittish foxes; you come here for space and silence, not charismatic megafauna. Access is decent from Van by minibus or taxi, but once you’re in the park, services thin out fast, so you carry your own water strategy and treat every spring with suspicion. Entrance fees, when collected, are usually low, but the real “cost” is logistical: fewer shops, fewer buses, and almost no English once you leave town, which can either feel wonderfully authentic or mildly exhausting after a long day. Camping is generally tolerated in obvious spots if you’re discreet and respectful, and there are a few basic pansiyons and guesthouses in nearby villages that feel more like staying in someone’s spare room than in a business. Compared with places like Mount Ararat National Park or Nemrut Crater Lake, Lake Van is less dramatic on a postcard but far less tour-bus territory, which means fewer crowds, fewer scams, and more of that quiet, slightly raw Eastern Anatolia vibe that rewards patient, self-sufficient backpackers who don’t need everything signposted and curated.

  • Akdamar Island and the Church of the Holy Cross (personal favorite) — a tiny island with a striking 10th-century Armenian church covered in storytelling stone carvings. The boat ride out, the island’s cliffs, and the sunset over the soda-blue water make it a surreal, very photogenic stop.
  • Mount Süphan — one of Turkey’s highest volcanoes that towers over the northern shore. Tough but rewarding hikes lead to sweeping views of Lake Van and the steppe; you’ll see alpine meadows, wildflowers in summer, and often a bit of solitude.
  • Nemrut Volcano and Crater — a dramatic volcanic landscape on the lake’s southern side with a small crater basin and geothermal feel. Hikes here feel lunar; good for sunrise/sunset photos and spotting rugged volcanic formations up close.

  • Van Castle (Van Kalesi) and shoreline ruins — ancient Urartian masonry and a fortress silhouette right by the water. It’s an easy cultural detour that gives context to the landscape and some killer panoramic viewpoints over the lake.
  • Pearl mullet migration and birdlife — Lake Van’s alkaline waters host the endemic pearl mullet, famous for its spring spawning runs into freshwater streams, plus many migratory waterbirds on the lake margins. Great for wildlife nerds and anyone who likes a little natural spectacle.
  • Thermal springs and coastal baths — scattered hot springs and traditional baths around the lake (Edremit area and others) are perfect for a low-cost, relaxing soak after a long day of hiking or driving.
  • Tatvan-Van ferry and lakeside trails — the ferry crossings are practical and scenic (useful for backpackers on a budget). Combine short shoreline trails with cliffs and volcanic outcrops for relaxed walks and easy photo stops between major sights.

You’ll find a mix of terrains here, from rocky paths to grassy hillsides, making it a great spot for both leisurely strolls and more challenging hikes. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy spotting various birds, especially migratory species, as well as the occasional wild sheep or goat.

One of the standout trails is the Akdamar Island Trail. Here are some details:
  • Length: 5 km
  • Estimated Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Key Features: Stunning views of Akdamar Island, historic church, and diverse flora
  • Terrain: Mostly flat with some rocky sections

Another great option is the Van Fortress Trail:
  • Length: 3 km
  • Estimated Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Key Features: Panoramic views of Lake Van and the city, ancient ruins
  • Terrain: Well-marked paths, some steep sections

Getting to the park is quite straightforward. You can catch a bus from Van city center, which takes about 30 minutes. Just keep in mind that it can get a bit crowded, especially during the summer months, so if you prefer a quieter experience, aim for early mornings or weekdays. As for the entrance fee, it’s pretty reasonable, so you won’t break the bank just to soak in those views.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Lake Van National Park offers a generally accessible experience, but a few practical considerations can enhance your adventure. Weather can shift quickly, especially at higher elevations, so pack layers and a reliable rain jacket. The terrain varies; some trails are steep and rocky, requiring good footing and careful navigation.

Wildlife is present, including goats and birds, but encounters are rare. If you do spot animals, maintain a respectful distance—don’t feed them.

First-time visitors often underestimate the importance of hydration and snacks. Carry enough water, especially on warmer days, and take breaks to refuel. Timing your hikes for early morning or late afternoon can help you avoid the heat and crowds. Overall, with a bit of preparation, you can focus on enjoying the stunning landscapes without unnecessary stress.
