Backpacking in Soğuksu
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Soğuksu National Park as a wild mountain escape; the surprise is that it’s actually a compact, semi-groomed forest park that feels more like Ankara’s backyard than deep wilderness. It sits near Kızılcahamam, about an hour or so northwest of Ankara in central Türkiye. For backpackers, that means easy access, cheap public transport, low entrance fees, short marked trails, picnic-heavy crowds, and very limited true camping options. The pine forest, cool air, and birdlife (including occasional black vulture sightings) are the draw, not epic views. Compared with places like Köroğlu or Ilgaz, Soğuksu is tamer and more managed; I treat it as a recovery day spot, not a headline trek.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Scots pine and mixed oak forests — Old-growth stands of pine and oak give the park that cool, cathedral-like feel. Great for shade, mushrooms in autumn, and quiet walks under a high canopy.
  • Cold springs and mountain streams — The ”Soğuksu” (cold water) streams thread the park; shallow cascades and clear pools are lovely places to rest, soak your feet, or photograph reflections.
  • Hiking ridges and viewpoints — Short to moderate trails climb to ridgelines overlooking the Kızılcahamam basin and the Anatolian steppe. Views at sunrise or late afternoon are worth the sweat (personal favorite).
  • Wildlife watching — Keep an eye out for roe deer, wild boar, foxes and a healthy variety of woodland birds and raptors. Dawn and dusk are best; bring binoculars and be quiet.
  • Spring meadows and wildflowers

  • Spring meadows and wildflowers — In late spring the clearings and alpine meadows fill with blooms and butterflies — a big contrast to the dense pines and good for photographers or a lazy picnic.
  • Granite outcrops and boulder fields — Scattered rock formations break the forest monotony and make for interesting scrambling, photo angles, and small viewpoints without a long climb.
  • Simple picnic areas and backcountry camping spots — There are basic picnic terraces and plenty of secluded spots for a minimalist overnight. No five-star facilities, but peace, stars, and a campfire (where allowed).

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Weather: Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild, stable weather. Summer can be hot, often hitting 30°C (86°F) or more, which drains energy fast on trails.

  • Temperature: Winters are cold, frequently dropping below freezing, around -5°C (23°F), making hiking less comfortable and some paths icy or closed.

  • Daylight Hours: Longer days in late spring and early summer provide up to 14-15 hours of light, ideal for extended hikes and exploring without rushing.

  • Crowds: Peak summer months bring local tourists, especially weekends, which can dilute the solitude backpackers seek. Shoulder seasons are quieter.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs rise in summer; visiting off-peak can save money and avoid inflated prices.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October to dodge heat, crowds, and high prices—this balance preserves your stamina and wallet for what really counts on the trail.
