Most online blurbs sell Karagöl-Sahara National Park as a single postcard lake, but the real backpacker truth is that it’s a split personality: a compact, almost over-loved Karagöl area and a far more spread-out, underused Sahara plateau. Tucked in Artvin province in Türkiye’s far northeast, it’s a solid choice if you like moody forests, mist, and steep, leg-testing trails more than big, open alpine panoramas. Hiking is rewarding but short-range; think half-day circuits and ridge rambles rather than multi-day traverses. Wildlife is shy, weather turns fast, and public transport is thin, so you either hitch or pay for a transfer. Fees are low but not zero, and summer weekends bring local crowds to the lakeshore while the plateau stays quiet. Camping is possible but regulated and sometimes pushed into official sites or pensions, which are cheap by Western standards but not rock-bottom for Türkiye. Compared with Kaçkar Mountains National Park nearby, Karagöl-Sahara is less dramatic, less developed for serious trekking, but also less chaotic and easier to “sample” in a day or two without committing to big-mountain logistics.
