Backpacking in Krasnoilsk
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 6, 2026

Everyone talks about Krasnoilsk as “that border town,” a place you pass through on the way to or from Romania. The border matters, but for a backpacker the real value is slower: the smell of wood smoke at dusk, muddy boots after a forest walk, the sense that nothing here is staged for you. Krasnoilsk sits in far southwestern Ukraine, in Chernivtsi Oblast, pressed up against the Romanian frontier.

As a destination, it’s modest. Think rural edge-of-the-Carpathians, not postcard city break. The town works best as a practical pause in a longer route: a night or two to reset between Chernivtsi and northern Romania, or as a base for low-key walks in the surrounding hills and villages rather than big, dramatic treks. The center is small and walkable, with a couple of shops, simple cafés, and that slightly faded, workaday feel you get in border communities.

Transport is mostly by marshrutka and regional buses; they’re cheap but not always frequent, so you build your day around their timetable instead of the other way around. Once you’re in town, your feet do most of the work, though you may need a taxi or local driver for trailheads or nearby villages. There’s little in the way of classic backpacker infrastructure: expect guesthouses and homestays instead of hostels, quiet evenings instead of bar crawls, and conversations in Ukrainian or Romanian more than English.

Costs are low, especially compared with touristy Carpathian hubs like Yaremche or Bukovel, and that’s part of the charm if you’re traveling long and lean. Safety is mostly about common sense and understanding you’re near an international border: carry documents, respect restricted areas, don’t wander around checkpoints with a camera out. Compared with Chernivtsi, Krasnoilsk feels more rural and functional, less pretty but more “real,” the kind of place where you come to feel the region’s rhythm rather than to tick off sights.

  • Walking: Krasnoilsk’s compact center is best explored on foot. The streets are quiet, with uneven cobblestones and the occasional stray dog weaving through. Walking lets you soak in the scent of pine and the sound of distant church bells, all while saving money and discovering tucked-away corners.

  • Marshrutka (Minibus): These shared minibuses run frequently from early morning (around 6:00 AM) until evening (about 8:00 PM). Tickets cost just a few hryvnias, making them the cheapest way to reach nearby villages or the bus station. They’re cramped but quick, and the driver’s call of stops is part of the local soundtrack.

  • Local Bus: Scheduled buses connect Krasnoilsk to larger towns like Chernivtsi. They depart roughly every two hours during the day, with fares slightly higher than marshrutkas but offering more space and a smoother ride. Expect basic seating and a no-frills atmosphere.

  • Taxi: For short hops within town or when time is tight, taxis are available but pricier. Negotiate the fare upfront—drivers rarely use meters. The ride is faster and more comfortable, especially if you’re carrying gear or traveling in a group.

👛 Costs (as of 28 December 2025)What things cost and how to budget

Backpacking in Krasnoilsk, Ukraine, offers a raw, authentic experience where your money stretches further than in bigger cities, but the charm comes with a few practical realities.
  • Dorm Accommodation: Expect to pay around €8-€15 per night for a bed in a basic hostel or guesthouse. Options are limited and simple, often family-run, with modest facilities. The rooms are functional, sometimes with shared bathrooms, but clean enough to rest after a day exploring.
  • Meals: Local eateries serve hearty, traditional fare at very reasonable prices. A filling meal at a small café or market stall will cost about €3-€6. Think fresh bread, local cheese, soups, and stews that fill you up without emptying your wallet. If you shop at markets and cook yourself, you can cut costs even more.

  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: The town itself is more about soaking in the atmosphere than ticketed attractions. Small museums or cultural sites, if open, charge around €1-€3. Nature walks and exploring the surrounding Carpathian foothills are free, but guided tours, if you opt for them, start at about €10-€15.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Budget around €2-€5 for essentials like bottled water, snacks, or a local SIM card top-up. Internet cafes or Wi-Fi access in guesthouses are usually included or very cheap, but don’t expect high-speed connections everywhere.

All told, a realistic daily budget for backpacking in Krasnoilsk lands between €15 and €30. This range covers the basics without skimping on comfort or local flavor, letting you experience the town’s quiet rhythms without the stress of overspending.
⚠️ Prices can change and everyone travels differently, so take this as a rough guide. Hope it helps you plan your adventure!
