At dusk it calms right down and the lights make for great photos — perfect for a slow, salty sunset walk.
- Colourful Beach Huts and Seafront Stroll — The neat rows of pastel beach huts give the seafront a proper character you won’t mistake for anywhere else. Daytime is for picnics on the shingle and photographing the patterns of huts and groynes; evenings bring that soft light behind the huts and a much quieter promenade when most tourists have left.

- River Crossing to Walberswick and the Coastal Walks — A tiny seasonal foot ferry and the path across marshes are genuinely charming and feel like a proper coastal escape. Daytime it’s a brilliant way to reach quieter beaches, heathland and birdlife. Not much happens at night on the ferry, but the remote beaches nearby are brilliant for stargazing when conditions are good. (Personal favorite — the short ferry + walk; it turns a beach visit into a mini adventure.)
- Shingle Beach, Groynes and Low-Tide Exploration — Southwold’s shingle shore and timber groynes create patterns and pools that make beachcombing interesting — crabbing off the groynes, looking for unusual pebbles and small fossils, or watching local watersports when it’s breezy. Daytime is best for active exploration; at night the wide, empty shingle is peaceful for a starlit walk, but bring warm layers.
