Fort Christian is the oldest standing structure in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a red-painted Danish fort from the 1670s, and most people come for that alone. What gets overlooked is that it houses the Virgin Islands Museum, so the building is both the sight and the best short lesson in island history you can get in Charlotte Amalie. It stands on the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the United States Virgin Islands, on St. Thomas. Expect cruise ship crowds on port days, when the small rooms fill up and the heat inside builds. Entry is cheap, though the collection is modest and some displays feel dated. A visit takes about an hour. What makes it worth the trip is the thick masonry, the old clock tower, the cannon-lined courtyard and the way Danish, African and Caribbean stories sit in one place.
