Yes, backpacking Vanuatu independently is very doable, as long as you accept that domestic flights and island transport run on a looser schedule than you may be used to.
On
Efate and
Espiritu Santo, shared minibuses, guesthouses at 3,000 to 6,000 VT (about US$25 to 50) and walk-in tours make solo travel easy. On
Tanna and the outer islands, you book a bungalow in advance and it arranges the truck from the airstrip, typically a 2 to 2.5 hour ride to the Mount Yasur side. English and French are widely spoken alongside Bislama, people are relaxed and welcoming, and the main thing to plan around is building one spare day into any itinerary that includes a domestic flight.
Vanuatu works in as little as 2 days if you stay on Efate, but 5 to 10 days lets you add Tanna or Espiritu Santo without rushing.
Two days covers
Port Vila, the
Mele Cascades and the east-coast swimming spots. Three days on
Espiritu Santo fits
Millennium Cave and the beaches north of Luganville. For
Tanna and
Mount Yasur, allow at least 2 nights, since the island transfer alone eats half a day. Ten days lets you combine all three islands with buffer days for weather and flights, which matters because domestic schedules can change at short notice. Pentecost and the northern islands need a week on top of that.
Yes, you can travel around Vanuatu without a car by combining minibuses, local trucks and short domestic flights.
In and around
Port Vila, shared minibuses with a red “B” on the plate charge around 150 to 300 VT per ride. For Efate’s ring road, a hired minibus with driver costs roughly 8,000 to 12,000 VT for a half day. On
Espiritu Santo, tours include pickup from
Luganville, and trucks or chartered vans run up the paved east coast road to
Champagne Beach in 1 to 1.5 hours. Between islands you fly: Port Vila to Tanna takes 40 to 50 minutes, Port Vila to Santo about 50 minutes, usually 15,000 to 25,000 VT one way.
The must-visits in Vanuatu are Mount Yasur on Tanna, Millennium Cave and Champagne Beach on Espiritu Santo, and the Mele Cascades near Port Vila.
Mount Yasur is the standout: you stand on the rim of an active volcano at dusk for a permit of around 9,750 VT, reached by a 40 to 50 minute flight and a 2-hour truck ride.
Millennium Cave is a full-day jungle, cave and canyon trip from
Luganville at about 9,000 to 11,000 VT.
Champagne Beach and
Nanda Blue Hole sit on the same east coast road. On Efate, the
Mele Cascades and
Chief Roi Mata’s Domain, the country’s UNESCO site, are both under an hour from town.
If you are short on time in Vanuatu, skip the remote northern islands and Pentecost, and limit yourself to one or two of Efate, Tanna and Espiritu Santo.
Pentecost is famous for land diving, but it only happens on Saturdays from roughly April to June and requires extra flights.
Mota Lava and the Banks Islands need several days because of infrequent flights. On Efate, the small islands such as
Pele,
Nguna and
Hideaway Island are pleasant snorkeling days but can drop off a 2 to 3 day plan. On Santo,
Million Dollar Point is mainly for divers, and
Mount Tabwemasana needs 3 to 4 days with guides.
