Backpacking in Con Dao Island Trails
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Con Dao’s trails are practically empty; you get national-park-level scenery with almost no crowds breathing down your neck. Con Dao Island Trails sit off Vietnam’s southeast coast, a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City, inside Con Dao National Park. The hiking here is hot, humid, and honest—short-to-medium routes that spike sharply uphill through dense jungle to bare ridgelines and war-era lookout points. Views slam open to turquoise water and shark-fin islets, but the sun and loose rock make the climbs feel tougher than the distance suggests. Public transport is limited to basic island shuttles, so it’s still easier than remote northern treks, but less plug-and-play than Sapa or Da Lat.

What makes it a must-see hike

The Con Dao Island Trails in Vietnam are a backpacker’s playground, where every step is a dance between sweat and stunning views. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts; you’ll climb rugged paths that reward you with panoramic vistas of turquoise waters and lush greenery. Plus, it seamlessly integrates into a longer backpacking route through Vietnam, making it a must-stop. After the burn of the trail, nothing beats that first cold beer while soaking in the sunset.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Đầm Trầu (Đầm Trầu Beach) — The payoff after a sweaty hike through lowland forest: a sheltered bay with powdery sand, crystal-clear water and good snorkeling off the rocks. Reaching it on foot feels like you earned a private beach — also a seasonal turtle-nesting spot, so you might get lucky at dusk or dawn.
  2. Coastal ridge viewpoints (An Hải / northern lookouts) — Narrow trails climb exposed ridges that open onto sweeping views of the archipelago and turquoise bays. The mix of wind, jagged rock and sudden panoramas is what makes these sections feel more like a mini alpine route than a tropical beach walk.
  3. Côn Đảo National Park rainforest stretches — Stretches of lush, old-growth forest with shady singletrack, squat roots and a chorus of birds and cicadas. It’s the contrast that sells it:

  3. Côn Đảo National Park rainforest stretches — Stretches of lush, old-growth forest with shady singletrack, squat roots and a chorus of birds and cicadas. It’s the contrast that sells it: dense green, surprising wildlife (macaques, endemic birds) and the occasional solitary rainforest pool — very different vibe from the beaches.
  4. Hòn Bà and nearby reef views — Small offshore islets visible from cliff-top trails, with reefs that glow an unreal blue on calm days. From the path you get great vantage points to watch snorkelers, spotting rays or schooling fish, plus there are rocky promontories that make for excellent picnicking/photography stops.
  5. Côn Đảo prison sites & Hang Dương Cemetery — Short cultural detours off the hiking routes bring you to haunting colonial prison ruins and the memorial cemetery. The quiet, heavy atmosphere and interpretive plaques turn a nature hike into a history lesson — powerful and sobering in a way few island trails are.
Personal favorite: Đầm Trầu — nothing beats finishing a forest hike and dropping into that clear water; the whole walk-and-swim reward loop is addictive.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The dry season from March to August is your best bet—expect clear skies and minimal rain. The wet season, September to February, drags you through humidity and slippery trails, not ideal for serious hiking.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover between 28-33°C (82-91°F) in the dry months, perfect for sweating it out without overheating. Nights cool down to around 22°C (72°F), giving you a break from the heat.

  • Daylight Hours: Long days dominate March through August, with up to 12 hours of light. More daylight means more trail time and less rushing to beat the sunset.

  • Crowds: Peak season overlaps with the dry months, so expect more hikers on popular routes. Off-peak months bring solitude but risk weather headaches.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry months also align with local festivals

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike during peak dry season. Booking early can save you a few bucks, but the trade-off is a livelier atmosphere.

Pro-tip: Aim for late March or early April—dry trails, manageable crowds, and just enough heat to make that first cold beer at day’s end feel like a victory.
