Your toes hit the sand and it’s that awkward temperature where you’re not sure if it’s pleasantly warm or about to fry you, while a speaker from the beach bar behind you blasts 00s pop at 9:30 a.m. That’s An Bang Beach, just outside Hoi An in central Vietnam, where the South China Sea looks inviting, the deck chairs multiply like rabbits, and someone is always trying to sell you a coconut the second you sit down.

For backpackers, An Bang is easy: cheap homestays a short walk away, plenty of casual seafood joints, and a quick, flat cycle from Hoi An’s Old Town. The water is usually swimmable with a mild shore break, cleaner than city beaches like Da Nang but not exactly postcard-perfect once the crowds roll in and the sand gets cluttered with plastic after storms. It’s livelier and more social than Cua Dai’s eroded, slightly sad strip, but less wild and raw than the beaches further up the coast near Da Nang or down by Quy Nhon. I like it for a rest day: grab a sunbed, accept that you’ll hear EDM with your waves, and enjoy a beach that’s more about easy living than epic nature.
