Backpacking in Quang Ngai
👍 Recommendedcity ranked #26
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 4, 2026

Most people skip Quang Ngai, assuming it’s just a highway blur between Hoi An and Quy Nhon, but that’s lazy thinking. This central-coast city in south-central Vietnam is workaday, not pretty, yet it’s cheap, safe, and very real. You get the haunting My Lai site, quiet beaches like My Khe, riverfront beer joints, and almost no backpacker circus. It’s harder to meet other travelers than in Da Nang or Hoi An, but easier to meet locals, which is the actual upgrade.

For day trips from the city: Ly Sơn Island, the Sơn Mỹ (My Lai) Memorial, and the coastal Sa Huỳnh/Đẽo beaches are all easily visitable — Ly Sơn is my personal favorite.

In Quang Ngai, the best spot for backpackers is the city center around Tran Hung Dao Street. It’s where budget travelers cluster, drawn by affordable hostels that offer a social vibe without sacrificing safety. This area balances convenience and comfort—you’re close to markets, street food stalls, and transport hubs, which means less time wasted on logistics and more on exploring. It’s not about luxury here; it’s about maximizing your experience with smart, wallet-friendly choices in a lively, secure setting.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get around Quang Ngai

Here, your travel choices are a dance between saving time, stretching your budget, and grabbing comfort when you can. Understanding this trade-off map is your secret weapon to mastering the city’s transit game.

  • Local Bus: Runs roughly from 5:30 AM to 8 PM, costing under 10,000 VND per ride. It’s slow and stops often, but it’s a wallet-friendly way to reach neighborhoods beyond walking range. Expect basic comfort and a crowd that reflects daily local life.

  • Motorbike Taxi (Xe Om): Available 24/7, fares start around 20,000 VND for short hops. Faster than the bus and more flexible, but comfort depends on your tolerance for open-air rides and traffic chaos. Great for when time is tight but you want to avoid the expense of a private car.

  • Grab Motorbike: App-based, slightly pricier than street xe om but offers upfront pricing and cashless payment. Speeds up your travel with reliable availability, especially during off-peak hours when street taxis might be scarce.

  • City Transport Pass: Quang Ngai doesn’t have a formal city transport pass system. Budgeting for individual rides or motorbike rental is your best bet.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Most local attractions and temples have minimal or no entry fees, usually under $1 to $3. Guided tours or special sites might push this to $5 to $10, but they’re optional.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Think bottled water, snacks, occasional laundry, and small tips. Around $2 to $4 daily keeps you covered without surprises.

Altogether, you’re looking at a daily budget roughly between $15 and $30. This range gives you the flexibility to choose comfort or stretch your funds further without sacrificing the core experience. Quang Ngai rewards those who keep it simple and local—your wallet will thank you, and so will your sense of adventure.
⚠️ Prices can change and everyone travels differently, so take this as a rough guide. Hope it helps you plan your adventure!
