Rent a houseboat or join a small boat trip and Lake Kariba Recreational Park turns into a wildlife hide you can float through, because the shoreline animals come to the water and the boat gets you close without a vehicle. The park sits in the north of Zimbabwe, along the southern shore of the lake near Kariba town. I came ashore at the jetty, and a hippo grunt rolled across the water before I had even put my pack down. Walking trails are few, since elephants and buffalo wander the shore, so treat boats and short guided walks as your main option. Roads are paved to town, yet the park itself is quiet. Fish eagles call from the dead trees at the water’s edge.

Backpackers choose Lake Kariba Recreational Park because the water does the work that a vehicle does in other parks. A cheap sunset cruise or a day of fishing for tigerfish gets you close to elephants, crocodiles and hippos without a rental car. The lake is also huge, with the Kariba Dam wall a short walk from town, so you can build days around independent wandering, markets and viewpoints instead of fixed tours. Town is compact enough for self-guided travelers, and you can mix a few lazy lake days with onward travel along the Zambezi valley. The pace is slow, the sunsets are long, and nobody is rushing you.

  • Cool Dry Season (May to August): Days reach 24-28°C (75-82°F) and nights drop to 10-14°C (50-57°F), with the lake calm and mosquitoes fewer. Daylight runs about 11 hours.
  • Hot Dry Season (September to October): Temperatures climb to 32-38°C (90-100°F), and the shoreline fills with game coming down to drink. Fishing is at its best, and houseboat prices peak.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): Expect 28-34°C (82-93°F), humid heat, afternoon storms and about 13 hours of daylight. Roads to the lakeshore turn muddy, but rates drop and the shore is empty.
Book houseboats and lodges for school holidays (July to August and December) several weeks ahead.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Kariba is straightforward for hikers and campers, but the heat and the animals need respect. Elephants, hippos and buffalo walk through camps and shorelines. Keep your distance, never walk near water edges at night, and stay clear of hippos on grassy banks. Crocodiles live in the lake, so don’t swim or wash dishes at the shore. Midday temperatures often pass 35°C (95°F) in the hot months, so carry 3 to 4 liters of water, a hat and electrolytes. Malaria is present all year, so take prophylaxis, repellent and a net. Use licensed boat operators and wear life jackets, as afternoon winds can whip up waves on the open lake.
