Backpacking in Alice Springs Desert
👀 For curious travelersfestival ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

I stepped off the shuttle in Todd Mall and the first thing I met was a busker tuning a guitar beside a gum tree, while a galah heckled him from a lamppost. Nobody minded. Desert Festival fills Alice Springs, in the center of Australia, with a few weeks of music, art, comedy and community events, mostly in parks, courtyards and the Todd Mall. Crowds are friendly, local and relaxed, and you get a town that actually feels like itself. Book a bed well ahead, because this is a small town with limited rooms.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #16 festival in Australia
Why Alice Springs Desert should be on your travel list

Backpackers build a Red Centre loop around this festival because Alice Springs is otherwise a quiet outpost, and for a couple of weeks it fills with locals, artists and other travelers who all end up at the same free events. Strangers become a crew by the second night. The program mixes Aboriginal and non-Indigenous artists, so you hear stories and music tied to Arrernte Country, not a tourist re-enactment. It also fits neatly alongside Uluru and the West MacDonnell Ranges, giving you a reason to stay a few extra nights in a town most people use only as a transit stop.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Alice Springs Desert

  1. Todd Mall events: The pedestrian mall is the festival’s street-level heart, with buskers, stalls and performances under the gums. It is the easiest place to wander in with no plan and leave with a new favorite act.
  2. Araluen Arts Centre: Alice’s main theater and gallery hosts the headline shows and exhibitions. Come here for polished performances and Central Australian art you will not see in a coastal city.
  3. Olive Pink Botanic Garden: This arid-zone garden at the foot of Annie Meyers Hill makes a calm setting for open-air music and picnics. Rock wallabies and desert plants are the backdrop.
  4. Alice Springs Desert Park: Nocturnal tours and desert habitat displays connect the festival’s theme to the actual ecology of the region. Entry is ticketed, and it is worth a few hours.

Start with Todd Mall, because it costs nothing and shows you the whole mood of the festival in one afternoon.

🌤️ When to go?When is the celebration of Alice Springs Desert Festival?

The Desert Festival runs for about two weeks in July in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, with pop-up events across town, from Todd Mall to the Desert Park, and the dates shifting a little each year.
  • Best day: Saturday carries the biggest crowds and the full market and music program. Friday is calmer for talking to artists.
  • Weather: Days reach 19 to 21°C (66 to 70°F), nights drop to 3 to 5°C (37 to 41°F), rain is rare. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a refillable bottle and a warm jacket for the nights.
  • Booking: Reserve beds 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Rates can rise 20 to 40 percent.
  • Crowds: Arrive Thursday and leave Monday to dodge airport and highway rushes.
Book flights into Alice Springs early, since seats thin out fast.

The Alice Springs town center is the best base, because the festival sits within walking distance and the social budget beds cluster there.
Stay close to Todd Mall and the streets around it. You can walk to stalls, performances and evening events without paying for taxis, which are scarce late at night. Hostel-style dorms here fill with solo travelers, many heading on to Uluru or the Larapinta Trail, so sharing a table or a lift is easy. Powered and unpowered sites at caravan parks on the edge of town suit those with a tent or campervan. They are quieter, with shaded camp kitchens, though you will want a vehicle or bike to get into the center. Avoid walking alone along the dry Todd River bed after dark.

🍲 FoodEating & Drinking in Alice Springs Desert

Expect food trucks and market stalls serving a mix of bush foods and festival standards. Look for kangaroo skewers, camel burgers and damper with wattleseed or bush tomato relish. Wattleseed coffee and quandong jam or pies are the flavors that taste of Central Australia.
Water is the priority in the dry desert air, so carry a refillable bottle and top up at water points. Local craft beer and Northern Territory wine sit alongside fresh lemon, lime and bush-plum soft drinks.
Lines build at lunchtime on Saturday, so eat before 12 or after 2. Most vendors take cards, but mobile signal can wobble, so carry some cash for small stalls. Portions run generous, so share a plate and sample more.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

The Desert Festival takes place over about two weeks in July in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. The exact dates move each year, so check the program before booking. Events pop up across town, with the busiest program on weekends.
Many street events are free, while ticketed concerts and workshops run roughly A$0 to 60. Allow A$120 to 355 (about US$80 to 230) a day with dorm beds from A$40 and meals from A$15 to 25. Accommodation is the biggest swing, as festival weekend rates climb.
Free events need no tickets, but paid concerts and workshops can sell out, so buy online a few weeks ahead. Beds matter more, since Alice Springs fills up. Book dorms and flights 6 to 8 weeks out for the best prices.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

I would pair it with a few days on the Larapinta Trail or a drive to Uluru, using Alice as the base for both. Keep the festival days loose, since the best moments here tend to be unscheduled, and the program is more local than polished.
