Years ago Cazin felt like a quiet border town you only passed through: a few cafés, diesel buses, war-scarred buildings, and fields rolling off into Croatia. Today it’s still low-key, but cleaner, more confident, with new cafés and small shops threaded through the hills of northwest Bosnia and Herzegovina, near Bihać and the Una River. For backpackers it’s more of a practical base than a headline destination: cheap rooms, local burek, a compact center, and access to rural walks and castle ruins, but almost no hostel scene or nightlife. Buses link it decently to Bihać and Sarajevo, and you’ll mostly walk or grab local taxis. It’s calmer and more lived-in than Bihać, less scenic than Una National Park, and you’re unlikely to meet many other travelers, which is either the charm or the deal-breaker.
