Backpacking in Brotas
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #22
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 10, 2026

Your life is reduced to the roar of water and the plastic bite of the raft under your thighs; eucalyptus on the air, sun burning off the last of the morning chill as the Jacaré-Pepira river throws white spray in your face. That’s Brotas, a small countryside town in São Paulo state, central-southeast Brazil. It’s less a “must-see town” and more an outdoor hub: waterfalls, rafting, canyoning, zip-lines. The center is compact and walkable, with simple restaurants and a few relaxed bars, but nightlife is mellow and weekdays can feel sleepy. You come here as a base for nature days, not urban culture, and you’ll need transfers or tours to reach most trails and falls. Buses from São Paulo or Campinas make it reasonably accessible, and once in town you can walk almost everything. Hostels and adventure agencies make it social enough to meet other travelers, though it’s quieter and more family-oriented than party-heavy places like Paraty. Prices sit in the mid-range for Brazil, and it feels generally safe if you stick to organized activities and don’t wander drunk along dark rural roads.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • Parque dos Saltos — A compact municipal park right along the Rio Jacaré-Pepira with easy trails, viewpoints over cascades and rapids, picnic spots and short walks that give a great snapshot of Brotas’ river scenery without a long drive.
  • Rio Jacaré-Pepira (downtown stretch and rafting put-ins) — The river is Brotas’ lifeblood: whitewater rafting and kayak operators launch from town, riverside promenades and small rapids give real adventure right next to the urban area, and the riverfront is a good spot for people-watching and sunsets.
  • Paróquia Matriz (main parish church) — The town’s central church and square are where locals gather; it’s worth a quick visit to see the town’s civic heart, local religious art, and the atmosphere around market stalls and cafés nearby.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Whitewater rafting peaks in the dry season when river flow is strong but manageable. Waterfalls are at their fullest after rains, so timing your visit for late March or early April balances both.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect higher prices during school holidays and local festivals. Booking in the shoulder months can save money and secure better lodging options.

Pro-tip: Aim for late March to early April—rivers roar just right, crowds thin, and the air smells fresh from recent rains, making every adventure feel earned.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Brotas is generally safe, but like any place, it has its quirks. Stay alert in crowded markets; pickpockets can be sneaky. If you’re solo, avoid dimly lit streets at night—stick to well-trafficked areas where the energy feels alive.

Watch for common scams, like overly friendly locals offering unsolicited help; a polite smile and a firm “no thanks” usually do the trick. Carry your belongings close, and keep your phone out of sight when not in use. Embrace the vibrant atmosphere, but stay grounded.
