Backpacking in Alto Paraíso de Goiás
👍 Recommendedtown ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 23, 2026

Ten years ago Alto Paraíso de Goiás felt like a dusty frontier town with a few crystal shops and hippies trading stories under dim streetlights; now it’s a small, semi-bohemian hub where yoga mats share space with muddy hiking boots. Sitting in northern Goiás, on the edge of Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, it works best as a basecamp: trailheads, waterfalls, and canyons fan out in every direction, while the town itself is compact, walkable, and calm after dark. You arrive by bus or rideshare from Brasília, then mostly move on foot, with occasional taxis or tours to reach distant falls. Hostels, vegetarian cafés, and simple bars make it easy to meet other backpackers, but nightlife is more craft beer and live guitar than big-party chaos. It’s pricier and more new-age than nearby São Jorge, yet more practical and connected, with enough ATMs, markets, and tour agencies to keep a longer stay smooth without killing the sense that you’re still at the edge of the wild.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The dry season from May to September offers clear skies and minimal rain, perfect for trekking through Chapada dos Veadeiros. The wet season (October to April) brings heavy afternoon showers that can turn trails muddy and slippery.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover around 25-28°C (77-82°F) during the dry months, cooling to a crisp 12-15°C (54-59°F) at night. The wet season is warmer but more humid, which can sap your energy on long hikes.

  • Daylight Hours: Expect roughly 11-12 hours of daylight year-round, but the dry season’s clearer skies make those golden hours more reliable for photography and exploration.

  • Crowds: Peak backpacker season aligns with the dry months, so trails and hostels fill up. Visiting early May or late September can give you the best balance of good weather

  • Seasonal Activities: Waterfalls swell spectacularly right after the rains end, so June and July are prime for swimming under powerful cascades. The dry season also hosts local festivals celebrating regional culture and food.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and tours spike in the dry season due to demand. Booking ahead or aiming for shoulder months can save you a solid chunk of cash without sacrificing the experience.

Pro-tip: Plan your trip for early dry season—trails are firm, waterfalls are full, and the air smells fresh from recent rains, making every step feel earned and every view worth it.

  • Local Buses: These run sporadically between Alto Paraíso and nearby villages like São Jorge, starting around 6:30 AM and tapering off by 6 PM. Tickets hover around R$5, but expect basic comfort and a slow pace as the bus stops frequently.

  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: The main draw is Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. Entrance fees hover around $10 to $15 USD. Guided hikes can run $20 to $40 depending on length and group size, but going solo on marked trails is doable if you’re confident with maps and timing.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Bottled water, snacks, and occasional gear rentals (like waterproof bags or trekking poles) add up to about $3 to $7 daily. Wi-Fi is patchy and often paid by the hour in cafes or hostels, so factor in a couple of dollars if you need to stay connected.

Altogether, you’re looking at roughly $30 to $55 USD per day to cover the essentials without cutting corners. Alto Paraíso isn’t about luxury—it’s about trading creature comforts for wild mornings and star-filled nights. Knowing where to save and where to spend makes the experience flow smoother, letting you focus on the trails and the quiet hum of the cerrado around you.
