A guard at the turnstile waved me toward the planetarium line before I'd asked, saying the 2 p.m. show fills first and the rest can wait. He was right. Maloka sits in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, west of the center in Ciudad Salitre. Skip it if you have only one dry day for Monserrate or La Candelaria. Go if rain hits or you travel with kids, because the hands-on halls are well built and the dome show is the best hour inside. Crowds peak on weekends.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Teusaquillo and the Galerías area are the closest options, a 15 to 20 minute ride from Maloka along Avenida Calle 26 or the Avenida Carrera 68 corridor. Dorm beds run US$9 to 15. Chapinero and Zona T (Parque 93 side) hold the largest cluster of social hostels, with bars, restaurants and easy TransMilenio links, about 30 to 40 minutes away. La Candelaria is the classic backpacker pick, with walking tours and cheap menu lunches, and a 40 to 50 minute trip to Maloka by bus. Avoid walking alone after dark around Candelaria’s upper streets and near the Calle 26 bus stations. Staying in Ciudad Salitre is quiet and handy but has little nightlife.
