Backpacking in Antigua Fábrica Nacional de Licores
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #13
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The old liquor factory sits in a former distillery that still holds the country's national spirit history, and entry to the grounds is free. It stands in Barrio Amón's neighbor, Barrio Otoya area, east of downtown San José, in Costa Rica's capital. I expected a museum with bottles behind glass. Instead the courtyard smelled faintly of sweet cane and old stone, and kids' laughter echoed off the brick chimney. The cultural center and gallery spaces are worth your time; the souvenir shop is not. Walls are thick, the light slants through tall windows, and crowds stay thin. Check the exhibition calendar before you walk over.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #13 attraction in Costa Rica
What makes it a must-see attraction

Antigua Fábrica Nacional de Licores is the best place in San José to see how a state-run industry shaped daily life, and it does it without a ticket line. The tall brick chimney and the restored distillery buildings show industrial architecture that most visitors never connect to Costa Rica. Cane spirit, known locally as guaro, was a government monopoly here for generations, and the site tells that story in its bones. It also fits a free afternoon: pair it with the nearby Barrio Otoya and Barrio Amón streets, where old mansions and cafes make a walkable circuit. If you want San José beyond the gold museum and the central market, this is a calm, local-feeling stop.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Antigua Fábrica Nacional de Licores

  1. The brick chimney and facade: the industrial landmark that most people photograph first, rising above the old factory grounds.
  2. Restored distillery halls: high ceilings and thick walls show how the spirit was once produced and stored.
  3. Central courtyard: an open space where events and quiet sitting spots mix, with the factory walls around you.
  4. Cultural center exhibitions: rotating art and heritage displays use the old rooms, so what you see depends on the month.
  5. Guaro history displays: panels and objects explain the national cane spirit and the state monopoly behind it.
  6. Barrio Otoya strolls: leafy streets with early twentieth century houses just outside the gates.
Walking the courtyard and exterior is free, while any special exhibition or event may carry its own small charge.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Dry Season (December to April): Mornings in San José run 15 to 18°C (59 to 64°F) and afternoons reach 26 to 28°C (79 to 82°F). Skies are clear, so the courtyard and the old distillery buildings are pleasant for wandering. Crowds and bed prices peak around Christmas and Semana Santa.
  • Green Season (May to November): Afternoon downpours arrive most days, usually after 1 pm, and temperatures hold at 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). Rooms in the capital drop noticeably, and the grounds are quiet on weekdays.
  • Daylight: Days stay close to 12 hours all year, so plan outdoor visits before the afternoon clouds build.
Arrive on a weekday morning, when the grounds are emptiest and the rain has not started.

Barrio Escalante and Barrio Amón are the best bets, both a short walk or a few minutes by taxi from the old distillery beside Parque España and Barrio Amón, north-east of downtown San José. Amón has restored mansions turned into hostels, a good mix of solo travelers, and quiet streets by day. Escalante is the food district, with craft beer bars, small restaurants and easy company at communal tables in the evening. Downtown near Avenida Central has the cheapest dorms and the best bus access, but stay alert at night and use taxis after dark. Dorm beds in these areas typically run US$12 to 20.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Antigua Fábrica Nacional de Licores needs about an hour, maybe two if an exhibition is running. I would skip a dedicated trip and fold it into a half day walking through Barrio Otoya and Barrio Amón, then keep moving.
