- Arenal Volcano viewpoint — The star of the show: a near-conical volcano that dominates the skyline. On a clear day the views are spectacular and you can watch cloud formations wrap the peak; it’s classic Costa Rica scenery and great for photos.
- Las Coladas (lava-flow trails) — Walk across the hardened black lava fields from past eruptions (notably 1968). The contrast of new green growth pushing through jagged rock is striking — my personal favorite because it feels raw and otherworldly while still full of life.
- Pockets of old-growth rainforest — The park preserves remnants of mature forest with massive trees, thick epiphytes and layered canopies. Those quieter stretches are where you feel the jungle’s age and complexity.
- Wildlife watching — Toucans, tanagers, howler and white-faced capuchin

- Wildlife watching — Toucans, tanagers, howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis and an array of frogs and insects are all possible sightings. Early morning or late afternoon hikes give the best chances for activity.
- Lake Arenal vistas — From certain trails and viewpoints you get the dramatic combo of volcano, forest and Lake Arenal in one frame — a wide-open contrast to the tight jungle trails and a favorite for landscape lovers.
- Sunrise and sunset viewpoints — The volcano lights up at golden hour and you can get striking silhouettes or cloud inversions above the lake. It’s a short-lived show worth timing a trail or lookout around.
- Geology and eruption interpretation — Short, well-marked trails and signs explain the 1968 eruption and subsequent landscape changes. It’s neat to see the science behind what you’re walking through and how ecosystems recover.
