Book your boat and snorkel gear through the Isla de la Juventud dive operators before you arrive, because nothing is sold at the park gate. Parque Nacional Punta Francés sits on the southwest tip of Isla de la Juventud, in the south of Cuba. I stepped off the boat onto a pale beach, and the first thing I noticed was silence, broken only by pelicans and a distant generator. Skip the beach if you only want a bar and a lounger; go for the reef. Expect delays and cash-only surprises, so carry small bills. It suits divers and snorkelers, and bores anyone chasing trails or nightlife.

  • Dry Season (November to April): Calm seas and the clearest water for diving off Punta Francés, with highs of 26 to 29°C (79 to 84°F) and lows near 19 to 22°C (66 to 72°F). Daylight runs roughly 11 to 12 hours. Dive boats from Isla de la Juventud run most reliably now.
  • Wet Season (May to October): Hot and humid at 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), with afternoon downpours and hurricane risk peaking August to October. Boats get canceled in rough weather, and visibility drops.
  • Crowds and Prices: Tiny numbers year-round, but December to March is busiest and dive packages cost the most.
Book dives for February or March if you want flat water and the pick of the boat schedule.

🛏️ Where to stay?How to pick the right area

No lodging exists inside Parque Nacional Punta Francés, so you sleep in Nueva Gerona, the main town on Isla de la Juventud, about 46 km by road from the Siguanea marina. Casas particulares there cost roughly US$20 to 35 a night for a private room, often with breakfast for US$3 to 5 extra, and hosts can arrange taxis and dive contacts. Hotel El Colony, on the Siguanea coast, is the closest base for diving, with rooms around US$50 to 80 a night, and its dive center runs boats to Punta Francés. Backpackers on a tight budget should stay in Nueva Gerona and book a day trip, since transport to the coast is easier to organize from town.

Punta Francés is straightforward and well managed, and the real risks are at sea and in the sun. Dive operators run the boats and set the sites, so follow your guide's depth and time limits and keep to the mooring areas. Currents can pick up on the outer reef, so stay near the group. Mosquitoes and sand flies bite hard at dusk on the beach, so pack repellent. The sun is strong all year, so bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard. Don't touch coral or remove anything from the reef. Bring your own water and snacks, because supplies on the boat are limited.
