Backpacking in Vestamager Nature Park
👀 For curious travelersnational park ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most summaries sell Vestamager Nature Park as pure wilderness, but as a backpacker you’ll notice fast that it’s actually semi-wild wetlands stitched right onto Copenhagen’s metro line, with planes overhead and city kids on bikes. Sitting on Amager island, just southwest of central Copenhagen, it’s more urban edge-zone than remote national park. You get long, flat trails, big skies, birdlife, and grazing cattle, plus easy, cheap access and no entrance fee, but also wind exposure, limited wild camping, and a very managed feel. Compared with Denmark’s “real” national parks like Thy or Mols Bjerge, Vestamager is less dramatic, more day-hike and picnic than multi-day trek.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Salt marshes and tidal flats — Wide, low-lying mudflats are a feeding ground for migrating waders and ducks; at low tide you can watch flocks sweep in and pick the area apart like nature’s lunch counter.
  • Birdwatching hides and towers — Several simple hides and elevated viewpoints give great, quiet vantage points for spotting ducks, geese, raptors and reed-dwelling species without disturbing them.
  • Open grasslands and heath — Sweeping, treeless plains feel almost Arctic in scale; they’re great for long, wind-sweet walks and for seeing skylarks, hares and the odd roe deer at dawn or dusk.

  • Network of hiking and cycling trails — Flat, well-marked paths run for kilometres, so you can bike big loops or walk quiet stretches; surfaces are forgiving and easy on a budget bike or hiking shoes.
  • Coastal views and sunsets over the Øresund — The western shoreline offers big sky views and dramatic sunsets; on clear days you can see activity on the strait and get a different perspective on Copenhagen’s skyline.
  • Managed grazing and biodiversity meadows — You’ll notice sheep and cattle used to keep scrub down — it looks simple but that grazing maintains wildflower-rich meadows full of pollinators in spring and summer.
