- Petrified Wood Groves — massive fossil tree trunks and broken stumps everything turned to stone; the textures and banding in the wood are surprisingly vivid and make for excellent close-up photography and a really tangible connection to deep time.
- Exposed Fossil Beds & Sedimentary Layers — patches where layers of ancient sediment and fossil fragments are exposed, showing the park’s geological story. Great for poking around if you like geology or want to see how different rock layers weather differently.
- Wind-Sculpted Rock Formations — rounded buttes, mushroom rocks and fluted cliffs carved by wind and sand. They give the landscape a sculptural, otherworldly feel and throw dramatic shadows late and early in the day.
- Hiking Corridors Between the Forests — easy to moderate trails that thread

- Hiking Corridors Between the Forests — easy to moderate trails that thread through stands of petrified wood and rock outcrops. Walks are compact but rewarding — you can cover several highlights in a half day if you’re moving steadily.
- Desert Wildlife Pockets — quiet dawn and dusk bring out lizards, small mammals and a scattering of desert birds. Wildlife is subtle rather than abundant, but spotting a fox or a sunning agama lizard is a neat contrast to the stony scenery.
- Sunrise and Sunset Viewpoints — the low-angle light lights up the colors in the petrified trunks and the surrounding rock, turning ordinary browns into warm oranges and golds. Plan to be at a ridge or grove for the show.
- Dark-Sky Camping & Stargazing — far from city lights, the park offers brilliant night skies and great Milky Way visibility. Overnighting (where permitted) is one of the most peaceful ways to experience the place — just bring a warm layer and enough water.
