Your 3-Day Estonia Itinerary

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 3-day coastal-and-culture loop is for travelers who like a medium pace: one base change, a mix of small towns and nature, and travel by regional bus with short hops that still leave time for long walks and slow dinners. You’ll trace Estonia’s west coast from Tallinn through Lahemaa and Haapsalu to Pärnu, catching beaches, castles, and bogs without ever rushing for a connection.

Day 1: Tallinn to Lahemaa - Bog Boards & Captain’s Village

Start in Tallinn but head out early by bus or car to Lahemaa National Park, where you can spend the day walking forest and coastal trails and exploring manor grounds that show off the old Baltic-German estate culture. Before looping back toward the city, detour to Käsmu Village, a former captain’s village where you can wander between boulders on the shore and weathered wooden houses, then continue on to the small city of Rakvere for the night, breaking up the journey west and giving yourself a taste of everyday Estonian town life.

Day 2: Rakvere to Haapsalu

Day 2: Rakvere to Haapsalu - Castles, Coastline & Calm Streets

From Rakvere, ride a regional bus to the seaside town of Haapsalu, a place that feels built for slow walks and long coffee breaks. Spend the afternoon exploring Haapsalu Castle, climbing the walls and wandering the courtyards to get a sense of medieval power on the Baltic, then drift down to Haapsalu Beach for a stroll along the promenade and a quiet sunset over the shallow bay before settling into a guesthouse in town.

Day 3: Haapsalu to Pärnu - Spa Town Energy & Baltic Sand

On day three, continue by bus down the coast to Pärnu, Estonia’s classic summer town, and drop your bag before heading straight to Pärnu Beach for a long walk on the wide, pale sand and maybe a dip if the weather cooperates. In the afternoon, wander the compact center and step into the historic Pärnu Mud Baths building area to see how this town built its reputation as a spa retreat, then, if you have an extra hour, pop into the Pärnu Museum to connect the dots between resort culture and Estonia’s broader history before ending your loop with a relaxed evening meal and a late bus or next-morning connection onward.

For a bonus detour that almost no one adds, you could slip inland to the tiny village of Tõstamaa, where a slightly faded manor and quiet lanes give you a raw, unpolished slice of rural Estonia.

🙋 FAQFAQ: Backpacking Estonia

Estonia is very easy to backpack independently, especially if you’ve done any travel in Europe before. English is widely spoken in cities and tourist areas, prices are lower than in Scandinavia, and the country feels safe and straightforward to navigate, even if you’re solo. The main challenge is that rural areas can feel quiet and spread out, so you need to plan your bus times and food stops a bit more carefully than in Western Europe, but that’s part of the fun if you like a slightly offbeat, low-stress adventure.
If you only have a few days, you can still get a good feel for Estonia with 2–3 days in Tallinn and a quick side trip to Lahemaa National Park or a bog walk. For a proper backpacking loop that doesn’t feel rushed, aim for 7–10 days: Tallinn, Tartu, some time on the coast or islands like Saaremaa or Hiiumaa, and at least one national park. With two weeks you can slow down, chase cheap local buses, and actually enjoy the quiet forests instead of just ticking off cities.
You can absolutely get around Estonia without a car, and most budget travelers do. Buses are the backbone: they’re cheap, generally punctual, and connect Tallinn with Tartu, Pärnu, Narva, and many smaller towns, plus ferries link the main islands. The trade-off is that remote trailheads, tiny villages, and some coastal spots may only have a few buses a day, so you need to check schedules in advance, be ready to walk a bit, and sometimes base yourself in a town and day-trip out rather than hopping every single night.
For a first-time backpacker in Estonia, Tallinn’s Old Town is non-negotiable; it’s touristy but still has real character if you wander the side streets and hit the viewpoints early or late. Pair Tallinn with at least one “quiet Estonia” experience: Tartu for student-town energy and cheap eats, Lahemaa National Park for forest and coastal trails, or an island like Saaremaa for windmills, sea air, and slow evenings. If you have extra time, Pärnu is great in summer for a laid-back beach break that still fits a backpacker budget.
If you’re short on time, you can skip trying to see every Baltic Sea resort town and focus on one coastal base instead, like Pärnu or an island. Many smaller castles, manor houses, and random museums start to blur together, so pick one or two that genuinely interest you and spend the saved time on a bog hike, a national park, or an extra night in Tartu or Tallinn. You can also skip long detours to far eastern border towns unless you’re specifically curious about the Russian-Estonian mix; they’re interesting but not essential for a first quick trip.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Estonia in seconds.
