- Summit crater lake — A small, sacred lake sitting inside the volcanic cup at the top; its calm, glassy surface and the hush around it feel otherworldly. Pack a snack and sit awhile — it’s my personal favorite for the quiet and the weird serenity you don’t get on cliffs or ridgelines.
- Rim viewpoints over the Rift Valley — Long, sweeping panoramas that look down on patchwork farmland and the string of Rift lakes. Sunrises or late-afternoon light here make the drop-offs and distant lakes ridiculously photogenic compared with most short hikes.

- Afro-montane forest and birdlife — Sections of shady, mossy forest with mature trees and a real abundance of songbirds and raptors. If you like quieter wildlife—warblers, woodpecker-like calls and the odd mammal—this is where the hike feels like a proper nature escape.
- Pastoral trails and village encounters — The route weaves through grazing land and small villages, so you’ll see shepherds, grazing cattle, and occasional roadside coffee or tea stops. Those simple human moments—kids waving, a woman selling roasted barley—give the trek texture you won’t get on more remote, purely scenic routes.
