Backpacking in Luz-Saint-Sauveur
👀 For curious travelersvillage ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

The thing people realize too late about Luz-Saint-Sauveur is how perfectly it works as a base camp: one cheap bed, hot springs, and bus access to several legendary valleys, instead of repacking every night. This small village sits in the Hautes-Pyrénées of southwest France, between Gavarnie and the Col du Tourmalet, right in the crease of steep green slopes and grey rock. For backpackers, it’s a trade: real mountain access and a lived-in feel, but also some coach groups and higher prices in peak season. Many just pass through on their way to Gavarnie or Cauterets, but Luz is calmer than Cauterets and less postcard-perfect than Gavarnie, which makes it feel more like a place people actually live. Evenings are soft and slow: yellow streetlights on stone walls, the smell of woodsmoke and steak-frites, hikers limping slightly as they cross the bridge. Bars are low-key, more terrace beers than big nights out, and you’ll meet other walkers in gîtes and small hostels, swapping route ideas over shared tables before everyone drifts off early for the next day’s climb.
