Backpacking in Maison Carrée
UNESCO World Heritage site
👌 Worth visitingunique site ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people realize too late that Maison Carrée is one of the easiest “big history” stops in France to just wander past for free; you only pay if you go inside, but the real punch is in walking around it. It sits in central Nîmes, in the south of France between Montpellier and Avignon. As a backpacker, you get a shockingly intact Roman temple with serious wow-factor, zero ticket drama, and great photo angles at golden hour. Downsides: school groups, traffic noise, and a vibe that’s more city square than mystical ruin. I still linger every time.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #12 unique site in France
Why Maison Carrée should be on your travel list

The Maison Carrée in Nîmes is a must-see for backpackers who crave authenticity over Instagram likes. This ancient Roman temple isn’t just a pretty facade; it’s a piece of history that’s remarkably well-preserved. You’ll dodge the crowds that swarm more famous sites, making your visit feel intimate and special.

Entry is usually low-cost, and it fits perfectly into a broader route through the south of France, allowing you to explore charming streets and local cafes nearby. The architectural details are stunning, and the surrounding area offers a glimpse into everyday French life. It’s a rewarding stop that enriches your journey without breaking the bank.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Exceptionally well-preserved Roman temple — Built in the late 1st century BCE/early 1st century CE, Maison Carrée is one of the best-surviving Roman temples anywhere. Standing almost intact, the façade, proportions and overall silhouette give a rare, almost theatrical window into ancient urban Rome.
  • Corinthian columns and crisp architectural detail — Those slender, fluted columns with carved Corinthian capitals and the still-legible entablature show off Roman stonework at its finest. Up close you can actually read the quality of the carving — it’s the kind of detail that makes you stop and squint.
  • High podium and deep porch (the cella) — The temple’s tall stepped podium and deep portico create a dramatic sense of elevation and ceremony. Climbing the steps puts you at eye level with the

  • High podium and deep porch (the cella) — The temple’s tall stepped podium and deep portico create a dramatic sense of elevation and ceremony. Climbing the steps puts you at eye level with the façade and gives a real feel for how Romans staged sacred space.
  • Dedication to Gaius and Lucius Caesar — Maison Carrée was dedicated to Augustus’s grandsons (his heirs-apparent), so it’s not just pretty stone — it’s an imperial political statement. The temple tells you about Roman power, propaganda and how cities like Nîmes plugged into the empire.
  • Survival through reuse and careful restoration — Unlike many ruins, this building was reused over centuries (which helped preserve it) and later restored in the 19th century. The result is a monument that’s been kept intact rather than left to crumble into a pile of columns.
  • Global influence on neoclassical architecture — Maison Carrée isn’t just local history; architects worldwide copied its form. Thomas Jefferson used it as a model for the Virginia State Capitol, and its lines show up on countless civic buildings from the 18th century onward.
  • Beautiful contrast with the modern Carré d’Art — Opposite the temple sits the sleek, contemporary Carré d’Art museum. The old-meets-new pairing makes for great photos and a neat little lesson in how cities layer time — ancient stone against glass and steel.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Weather: Summers in Nîmes bake under a Mediterranean sun, often hitting 30-35°C (86-95°F). If you hate sweating through your shirt, spring or early fall offers milder temps around 18-24°C (64-75°F), perfect for wandering without melting.
  • Daylight Hours: Long summer days stretch sightseeing time until 9 pm, but winter cuts it short to around 5 pm. Plan accordingly if you want to catch the temple in golden hour light.
  • Crowds: Peak tourist season (June to August) means shoulder-to-shoulder selfies. Off-season, especially November through March, you get the Maison Carrée almost to yourself—quiet enough to soak in the Roman vibe without a selfie stick poking your eye.
