Sinnamary is known for its sea turtles and its position beside the Kourou space center, yet the quieter draw is the river: the Sinnamary flows past mangroves, rice-field savanna and a lonely stretch of Atlantic coast. The town sits on the coast in the north of French Guiana, between Kourou and Iracoubo. Streets are flat and wide, with tin-roofed houses, bakery smells at dawn and the hum of scooters. It is small, not a nightlife place, and meeting other backpackers takes luck, since most visitors arrive by car. Pirogues leave from the riverbank for mangrove trips where howler monkeys carry across the water. The payoff is silence, a fresh fish plate and a sky full of ibis.
