Backpacking in Chaukhi
👌 Worth visitingunique site ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people online talk about Chaukhi like it’s some remote, hardcore alpine secret, but here’s the twist: if you’re reasonably fit and based around Juta or Kazbegi, it’s actually one of the more accessible “wild” treks in northern Georgia. Chaukhi sits in the eastern Greater Caucasus, near the village of Juta in the Kazbegi region, close to the Russian border. The draw is simple: those jagged Chaukhi Massif peaks look like someone dropped a mini-Patagonia behind a sleepy mountain village. The wow-factor is real, especially at sunrise or in moody clouds, and the photo payoff is huge. But you’ll share the lower trails with day-hikers and Tbilisi weekender crowds in high season, and prices in Juta are creeping up fast. Still, once you push past the horse-tour bottleneck, the vibe flips to quiet, raw, and properly alpine.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by untamed nature, with the Caucasus Mountains as your backdrop. This isn’t just a photo op; it’s a moment to breathe in the fresh air and feel the pulse of the land.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for trekking and river activities, while winter transforms Chaukhi into a low-key snow destination—great if you want to dodge crowds but expect limited services.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you 20-30%, and local guesthouses often throw in extras when business is slow.
Pro-tip: Aim for late spring or early autumn—when the weather is kind, the crowds thin, and the prices don’t gouge your wallet. That’s when Chaukhi’s real charm sneaks up on you.

Stepantsminda is another solid option. It’s smaller but has a friendly atmosphere. You’ll find plenty of budget-friendly accommodations, and the locals are genuinely welcoming. This area serves as a great base for hiking to the Gergeti Trinity Church, where the scenery is nothing short of magical.

Both spots are safe and social, perfect for solo backpackers or those on a budget. You’ll meet like-minded adventurers and share stories over a cup of strong Georgian tea. The real magic lies in the connections you make and the experiences you share, not just the sights you see.

  • Activities: Many outdoor activities, like hiking, are free or low-cost. Guided tours can range from €20 to €100, depending on the length and inclusions. Look for local guides who know the area well; they can provide insights that enhance your experience.
  • Miscellaneous: Budget an extra €10 to €20 for souvenirs or unexpected expenses. Local crafts can be tempting, and you’ll want to bring home a piece of Georgia’s rich culture.

Understanding these costs helps you plan better. Chaukhi’s charm lies in its authenticity, and being prepared will let you enjoy it fully.
