- Brocken Summit — The highest point in the Harz (1,141 m) and the trail’s atmospheric heart: windswept heath, a craggy weather station, and the classic “sea of clouds” mornings. It’s part natural spectacle, part folklore hotspot (witch legends stick here), and the views are worth the climb — especially at sunrise.
- Torfhaus and the Raised Bogs — Wide, open moorland and boardwalks over sphagnum bogs that feel like a different world compared with the surrounding spruce forest. The landscape is rare for central Europe, full of sundews and peat moss, and gives you long sightlines to the Brocken — perfect for windy, cinematic walking.

- Bodetal (Bode Gorge) — A dramatic, narrow river gorge with steep granite walls and a rush of emerald water below; the contrast between cliff, forest and river is striking and photogenic. The trail winds along vantage points and stairways — it’s one of the wildest, most vertical stretches you’ll hit on the Hexenstieg.
- Hexentanzplatz (Witches’ Dance Floor) above Thale — A plateau bristling with witch-myth lore, great viewpoints over the Bodetal, and a theatrical, slightly kitschy cultural scene (statues, folklore events, ropeway). It’s half amazing view, half living legend — a must for the trail’s spooky atmosphere and Renaissance-y photo ops.
- Ilsefälle & Ilsestein — A fairy-tale set of cascades and a granite tor near Ilsenburg: shady woodland, tumbling water, and a compact viewpoint (the Ilsestein) that rewards a short scramble. It’s the kind of gorge-and-waterfall detour that refreshes tired legs and reminds you why hiking beats sightseeing by bus.
