Backpacking in Elbhöhen-Wendland
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #26
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated November 3, 2026

Trains and a rental bike get you around Elbhöhen-Wendland without a car, which matters in a region of villages and flat riverside lanes. It sits in the north of Germany, on the Elbe's southern bank near Lower Saxony's border with Mecklenburg. A farmer at a gate once told me the dike path beats the road, and he was right: quiet, grassy, with storks overhead. Paths are gentle, crowds are thin, wildlife is mostly birds. Day one: ride the dike, then eat in a village inn.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #26 national park in Germany
What sets this place apart

Elbhöhen-Wendland suits backpackers who prefer slow, self-guided days over ticking off sights. The pull is the Elbe dike path, where you ride or walk with floodplain meadows on one side and the river on the other, and cranes and storks work the fields. Round villages, the Rundlingsdörfer of the Wendland, give you something to look at between stretches. Camping and farm stays keep costs modest, and no tour is needed because signposted routes are easy to follow.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while exploring Elbhöhen-Wendland

  1. Elbe dike path: The flat, signposted route runs along the river with open floodplain views and constant bird activity.
  2. Rundlingsdörfer: Villages built in a ring around a central green, with half-timbered farmhouses you can walk through in minutes.
  3. Elbtalaue floodplain meadows: Wet grassland where storks, cranes and geese feed, best seen from the dike at a slow pace.
  4. Hitzacker old town: A small river town with timber-framed houses on an island, good for a coffee stop and a riverside stroll.
  5. Elbe ferries: Small crossing boats let you swap banks mid-ride and see the river from the water.
  6. Göhrde forest: Old beech and oak woods with quiet tracks, a shady change from the open river.
Together they fill two relaxed days, or one long day if you cycle.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Most backpackers sleep in the towns along the river, since Elbhöhen-Wendland is a rural landscape with no hostels of its own. Dannenberg (Elbe) is the practical hub, with small guesthouses and rooms from about €45 to 70 a night, plus a train link to Lüneburg. Hitzacker offers pensions and a riverside campsite, with pitches around €15 to 25. Lenzen on the Brandenburg bank has simple rooms and campsites too. Farm stays and holiday apartments are common in the villages, so book ahead in July and August. Dedicated hostels are rare, so camping suits a tight budget best.

Regional trains reach nearby towns, and bike rental helps with the final stretch. Crowds stay light outside summer weekends. Walking the dike costs nothing.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Elbhöhen-Wendland is gentle, flat to rolling country, and the main hazards are weather and logistics. Dike paths have almost no shade, so carry 2 liters of water and sun protection in summer. Spring and winter high water can flood riverside trails, so check local notices before you set out. Ticks are common in grass and woodland, so wear long trousers and check yourself each evening. Wild boar and deer keep their distance. Cell coverage thins in villages, and shops close early, so stock up on food beforehand.
