Backpacking in Uckermärkische Seen
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #20
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people who’ve heard of Uckermärkische Seen assume it’s just “Berlin’s lake district for day-trippers.” That’s lazy intel. This national park sits in northeastern Brandenburg, north of Berlin and close to the Polish border, and it’s a quiet, low-drama playground for patient backpackers. Long, flat forest-and-lake hikes, good birdlife, and beaver-haunted shorelines are the draw; big mountain views are not. Access by train plus bus is workable but slower than it looks on a map, and there’s no flashy infrastructure. Camping and simple pensions are affordable, entrance is free, and crowds stay modest compared with Müritz or Jasmund, but that calmer vibe also means fewer trail signs, fewer shops, and more planning on you.

Ranked #20 national park in Germany
Why Uckermärkische Seen should be on your travel list

Backpackers flock to Uckermärkische Seen for its blend of independent exploration and budget-friendly options. You’ll find campsites and hostels nearby that won’t break the bank, allowing you to stretch your funds for experiences that matter. The park offers a variety of trails, from serene lakeside walks to more challenging routes, catering to all levels. It’s perfect for self-guided travelers; you can set your own pace without the constraints of a tour. This freedom lets you soak in the tranquil beauty while keeping your energy and budget intact for those special moments.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Oberuckersee (the big Ucker lake) — The largest water body in the park, wide open water and long grassy shores make it perfect for a lazy swim, shoreline walks or paddling. Big-sky views at sunrise and small fishing villages on the rim give it that quiet lakeside vibe.
  • Unteruckersee and the Ucker river corridor — A string of connected lakes and the slow Ucker River make this ideal for multi-stop canoe or kayak trips. Gentle current, reed-fringed banks and lots of pull-up spots for a picnic or wild swim.
  • Raised bogs and moorland — The park’s peat bogs are a different world: misty, open expanses, peat hummocks and fragile plant communities. Boardwalks and short trails let you explore without sinking your boots or damaging the habitat.
  • Birdlife hotspots (cranes, white-tailed eagles, waterfowl)

  • Birdlife hotspots (cranes, white-tailed eagles, waterfowl) — This is prime bird country. Spring and autumn migrations bring large flocks of cranes; keep an eye out for white-tailed (sea) eagles cruising the thermals and countless ducks in the reedbeds. Bring bins and go early or late in the day.
  • Beaver and otter riverine areas — Quiet backwaters and side streams are where you’ll see fresh beaver activity (chewed trees, lodges) and sometimes otter tracks at the water’s edge. Best chances are at dusk or after a calm morning paddle.
  • Hiking and cycling trails — A network of well-marked trails links lakeshores, forests and meadows. Trails range from short nature loops with bird hides to longer day routes that cover very different landscapes without big climbs — great for budget travelers on foot or bike.
  • Prenzlau and the lakeside villages — Use Prenzlau or one of the small lakeside towns as a base: old brick-Gothic architecture, a few cozy cafés, and local info/visitor centers for maps and low-cost guided walks. Practical and pleasant after a day in the outdoors.
